Forget the meme, the cryptocurrency, the other huge successes. The beautiful story of a kind, generous woman adopting a rescue dog that would have been "put down" (read: killed) and a long happy life for them both actually makes me tear up. Good for the successes for both of them, but the start of the story says it all for me. And I'm a cat man.

The Japanese dog whose photo inspired a generation of oddball online jokes and the $23-billion Dogecoin cryptocurrency beloved by Elon Musk died on Friday, her owner said.

"She quietly passed away as if asleep while I caressed her," Atsuko Sato wrote on her blog, thanking the fans of her shiba inu called Kabosu -- the face of the "Doge" meme.

Rest in Power Kabosu.

Cryptocurrency was promised as a democratization of finance and escaping the control of government and Wall Street.

Atsuko Sato should be a billionaire but the meme and bitcoin have been appropriated as usual by cryptowhales like Musk as another financialized instrument that keeps them flush during highs and lows and just impoverishes smaller investors.

Rest in peace Kabosu. You were deeply loved and brought your human mom great joy.

I had a whippet named Devo for 15 years. I took him on lengthy runs along the river and over the mountain that he eventually learned himself, and he would disappear for a half-day at a time only to have an acquaintance who lived 15 kilometers away to call, "I have your dog!" (he'd come home by himself only if people didn't catch him).

And when his time came, I held him in my arms, and he looked at me and said with his mischievous grin, "Y'know what - I'd do it again."

The Japanese dog market is huge.

Awful news to wake up to. RIP to Kabo-chan. She sure lived a great life.

A $100,000 statue of Kabosu and her sofa crowdfunded by Own The Doge, a crypto organization dedicated to the meme, was unveiled in a park in Sakura in November last year.

Hopefully loyal Kabo-chan's statue becomes famous as the Hachiko one in Shibuya has done.

Apparently Sato san refused to take legal action for image rights, and even refused a multi million offer from Musk himself.

As honorable as that attitude is… Whisky Tango Foxtrot!

Rest In Peace, sweet one.
