Not a Luddite by far but I gave up my keitai, still using my Nexus 7 but no other PC in the House. No DVD or BD player no Game Console.

Products are never the problem, it's the choices we make that matter.

.

or you could..I dunno... make time to go out and meet people, make friends and get real hugs?

First you have to educate people on how to interact outside of the group, which is their comfort zone. I know a number of early 20's females that will not go out on a date with a guy alone until they are "officially" a couple, otherwise everything is in a group.

Products like this will fit a niche market for the people who can't or don't know how to interact well with others.

It won't be long till the winners of the world's worst invention -- the lap pillow -- will soon be updating their product with a front pants' pocket for cell phone, so you "won't feel lonely" while talking to someone... or what was the lap pillow's justification for existence? "We all want to feel like we are resting our head on our mom's lap"? (which made it freakier that you could change the panties on it!). Anyway, this sounds more or less like the same thing, with similar, sad reasoning behind it. Or at least like the 'strong arm pillow'.

And maybe somebody should tell the inventors of this thing that most people don't like to sleep with a functioning cell phone right by their head for numerous reasons.

After long-term use, will one see the pillow in one's mind, when gazing at the lover finally visiting in the flesh? How long for that feeling to go away?

Maybe at first reunion the pillow will seem preferable. Except for some missing functionality, it's got zero faults. A lot cheaper to maintain after the initial purchase, too.

@Strangerland:

No, I don't.

While obviously I police my kids (don't hit/watch out for cars..etc), they kind of figured most of "how to interact with other people" on their own at pre-school. Learned pretty quick if they say something stupid the other kid'll bop 'em on the head.

People are naturally social- it's just something we do..nothing that should require education in how to be social. Unless of course the kid missed the "let's practice how to be social with our peers" time in lieu of catching all their pokemon.

I first saw this story on Yahoo! News.

The comments were pretty funny.

****As they say:"Honey, not now, I am on the phone".I wonder how will that affect the population control?

Welcome to the land of ersatz.

A man with a dog is talking and talking to his cellphone and the dog just patiently waits and waits, and looks up as if the dog wonders when the phone conversation ends. A mother pushing a baby cart is holding a cell phone like her own baby and talking to the cellphone instead of talking to her baby. A couple (a man and a woman) each holding a cell phone while sitting together inside of a cafe are talking and talking to the cellphone instead of talking each other. A half of a family members having a dinner time together in a restaurant are viewing their cellphone. Now you got this cellphone doll and you are going to hug it, kiss it, and sleep with it. We, human, are more and more isolating themselves each other. So sad!

I would argue that things such as this only facilitates their ability to remain shut-ins. In fact, I would more argue that Japanese society (and many others) overly facilitate this, which is incredibly unhealthy for humanity as a whole.

The notion that one needs to be educated on how to interact with other humans is frightening, at best.

Strangerland: You mean the most natural thing in the world that all parents do with their children from birth?

I thought Japanese and other Asians mostly don't hug their kids, or anyone in public. So maybe this'll be a hit.

Why that's not creepy at all... (o_o)

@Strangerland:

Sorry, we seem to be arguing semantics about this- let me rephrase.

My first post was in response to Yubaru- my meaning that the people who are buying this (adults, not children) could just go out and meet people.

He responded that said people [adults] might need educating on how to be social, which I believe to be a sad reflection on society in general. Those adults should have naturally learned how to be social growing up- as you put it through parenting and/or growing up. Beyond the basics from childhood a lot of learning how to be social is trial and error. (striking out at the bar, crash and burning with a girlfriend...etc)

Again, my point was about adults who missed the bus, so to speak. They don't need to be sat down and explained what to (and not to) do, but rather just go out and experience things.

maybe somebody should tell the inventors of this thing that most people don't like to sleep with a functioning cell phone right by their head for numerous reasons.

They'll know soon enough whether or not that's the case. If they make a profit, then enough people don't care about sleeping with a phone by their head. If they don't make a profit, the people will have spoken.

So you can feel like you're hugging someone far away from you. Like with long distance relationships. This has application in the real world. I'm game.

People are naturally social, that does not mean they are naturally good at it. And all parents teach their kids how to be social - saying please and thanks, not pushing other kids down in the park, how to deal with staff at restaurants etc. Of course, some parents teach their kids the wrong way, by setting bad examples, and other parents don't teach their kids, meaning their kids end up socially inept. But that doesn't change the fact that parents teach kids how to be social, and the kids who are better at being social are those who will have had better teachers.

Fantastic idea ! Absolutely Genius!

And thus we tie ourselves even closer to mobile technology.

Not a Luddite by far but I gave up my keitai, still using my Nexus 7 but no other PC in the House. No DVD or BD player no Game Console.

I do read a lot using the Kindle app, got my MP3 collection on it, etc. My bills for calls, etc has dropped a lot including household electricity. Too many devices with duplicate functions, IMHO.

Sure the product will sel well.
