Unamused: "It isn't the Japanese that are to blame, it is the Chinese."

It's ALWAYS someone else's fault, of course. Despite Japan consuming more than 80% of the world's blue-fin tuna, they get upset and cry about others infringing on "Japanese culture" when those nations fish in the MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

Eels, whales, tuna. Now saury? Japan is fishing the oceans to death. People, especially the Japanese, need to realize that not every damn meal has to consist of sea food or meat.

@Pukey2 It isn't the Japanese that are to blame, it is the Chinese.

Chinese fishing fleets are like migrating locusts, stripping the oceans bare out of pure greed. It's good to see that Argentina and Indonesia have started sinking Chinese fishing vessels once they enter those nation's territorial waters.

I wouldn’t eat any fish that swims in waters contaminated from the still out of control Fukushima Daiichi NPP, which will be releasing massive amounts of stored radionuclides direct into the sea. Saury follow these oxen currents.

This annual woe-is-me hand-wringing about declining fish stocks gets on my nerves no end.

You could fix this is three years. Just stop fishing. Three years from now the sea will be teeming with life.

Fund the fishermen from the public purse for three years not to fish. Or you will be funding them from the public purse forever when there are no more fish left and they refuse to learn other skills.

But no. It has to be "Our Culture". even when you're on a guaranteed fast track to never being able to eat your traditional foods ever again.

Our Culture.

Blame China.

J-Fishing cartels give large brown envelopes to the LDP.

Nothing is going to change, until it's too late.

Japan has been spearheading an effort to address fishery resource depletion

Really? Well how about starting with an awareness campaign? - I teach sustainable development and there is virtually no awareness of sustainable issues regarding fish consumption of maguro, ebi etc.

And still, it's very difficult to find MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) sustainably certified fish in supermarkets in Japan.

Just import the Atlantic saury , it looks the same , tastes the same and far cheaper than that expensive short nose skipper .

The stick-held dip net saury fishing season got under way early Wednesday, with 10 small vessels setting out toward Russian waters from the east coast of the northernmost main island of Hokkaido.

And blame Taiwan and China for "overfishing" and then go to "Russian" waters to catch more?

Well spoken, smithinjapan

You know, you CAN just stop consuming it for a while. You don't HAVE to sit and lament that they are going to be fished out of existence like it's a predetermined outcome, and cry about how you used to eat it as a kid, and how when Taiwan and China fish for it it's "overfishing" and must be stopped, but when Japan does it it's "culture". Just give it a break for a bit... let the stocks replenish.
