yeah Japanese husbands shout their love for wives in public..because they always like to do in the group and they are really..hardworking.

I know a Japanese woman whose fiance brought her a rose for no reason one day. She screamed, and then cried, from happiness. It was the first time anyone had given her flowers in her life. I can see why any Japanese woman would think the world of this. :)

Instead of followings each other like lemmings into a public space to become spectacles they should be at home in bed with their spouses.....

I like these kind of event. I know Japanese guys are not good at telling wives how much they love their wives and how much appreciated. Even they think about it a lot in their mind, they don't tell wives... So these events are good opportunity to tell wives what they think everyday. Sweet.

How oddly romantic!

I hope JT prints more stories like these...

Sounds like it could have been a nice cute event, but sometimes I think,

Why can't they just do things normally here? (Like be nice to your wife) Why do they have to always make some thing (event) and do it in a group??

“The economy is getting better in Japan and I see a lot of Japanese married couples getting more active in deepening their relationships,”

I am glad to see this quote here ;-)

@noliving - in case you are unaware declare means to say.

And you know that these gentlemen don't do that how exactly .....

Never said that they didnt, just that everyday small tokens of affection are prefererable to me to a one off big staged event.

I think it is you that needs to lighten up a little hidingout!

That is quite lovely event! very good opportunity for them to show their feeling to wives. hopefully they will do every day or at least once a week.

I was just passing through the park, and at first I thought it was a party organized by some omiyai agency. Now I know what it was :)

Thanks for the eyewitness report! Recently this news story gets reported every year in the "wacky Japan" columns, but actually it's on the same level as old reports of weeping salarymen being forced to sing "My Way" in public as a way of overcoming their fears. It's one of those publicity stunts that the average Japanese man would never dream of even watching, let alone taking part in.

Japanese men love and appreciate their wives deeply, but they have more subtle ways of showing it than with flowers and poems.

“I’m sorry that I’ve gained weight over the last seven years,” a suit-clad man yelled. “But that’s because the meals you cook are so delicious.”

I feel your pain

hidingout and bicultural, I personally support and love Japan in many ways but you know why there so many negative comments on this topic, because this is not the Japanese way, and they dont even bother to change, most of them are not even considered about extinction of Japanese race. 40% Japanese men dont want to get married and 65% of married want to get divorce, this society is losing emotional values at great speed, and I think emotions seperate us from machines! Bravo to organizer, good event, but this shouldn't be normal? To appreciate your wife regularly, to express your feeling regularly if not everyday!!! Do we need events organized for such things??? Shouldn't they try to change more of them rather than just working 24/7 to build good economy??

especially when one man got down on his knees to offer his wife a bouquet.

I give my Japanese wife bouquet more than three times a year, specially on her birthday and valentines day when every girl in Japan is running behind chocolate bars. Problem in Japan is that life is too much materialistic and these people are becoming like emotionless robots. You get something on valentine and then you have to return on white day, is everything in this country about give and take? No emotions??? The Japanese who interact with foreigners change a lot but those who dont they need to see Korean movies and dramas to feel what love could like be....sad.

A really nice, heartwarming article and most of the comments are negative. Japanese can't get anything right, can they?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

it's nice I suppose, and better than nothing, but for me and I suspect many other women, there are few things more attractive than a man confident enough in himself to be able to express his feelings whenever and wherever he chooses, rather than at a staged event such as this.

And you know that these gentlemen don't do that how exactly .....

ffs ease up a little. So many people on this site just criticize Japan no matter what they do. These guys took time out from whatever they were doing that day to publicly thank their wives. Rather than have their spontaneity called into question, they should be encouraged.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Odd! I read a report the other day that stated 65% of Japanese men have considered divorce. I guess these guys come from the other 35%.

Romance is in the air.. Valentines Day men should buy chocolates for the women instead of the other way around.. I hope this leads to more romance.. there needs to be more romance in movies.. and also commercials.. this will impact love and having babies.. growing the birthrate. Japanese couples need to protect the culture of Japan by having more kids and not worry so much about how to pay for University education... soon education will be free on line anyway.. so get on it and start romance will be a cure for all ills.. Aloha

Bet you the number of men who want to complain about their wives outweighs those who appreciate their wives, 10:1

1 ( +4 / -3 )

So long as they mean it, all the power to them. Here's hoping these and other men can be more open with their affection, and the women as well -- meaning they communicate with one another better overall. Shouting it out can be fun, but I hope they don't limit expressing themselves to this kind of thing once in a while.

Smith lets see you do this for your wife! Then post a link for all of us to see you doing this!

After 25 years my husband is still macho to me. He doesn't need to attend this event as my macho Japanese husband declares his love to me everyday.

Ya I don't think anyone here needed to know about the part in bold

The event, now in its fifth year, was thought up by Kiyotaka Yamana with the support of a local flower shop to urged Japanese men to show their affection in more explicit ways.

with the support of a local flower shop

Yet another tradition started by someone wanting to sell something, (White Day anyone?)

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Why not tell them to their face every morning?

2 ( +5 / -3 )

A bouquet of flowers wouldn't suffice randomly ? Perhaps even coming home earlier and cooking dinner for her instead once and awhile ? Foot massage ?? I think most wives know if their husband loves them or not and would rather see that they are appreciated....standing in a park shouting it ?? Take the love of your life out and romance her like you did before you married her.

Shouting really does seem to be the way to make a point in Japan. In the work place managers yell at staff as if they are five years old. In high schools students making speeches build up to a tearful crescendo of shouting out how they will 'gambaru'. High school softball and tennis playing students scream every time they throw a ball, hit a ball or even just arrive on the court to do training. And in TV dramas they shout more than they talk - even in family converstion. As for Sanma-san..... . Now husbands are shouting about their obento boxes. Are sales in headache tablets booming in Japan?

Now for my next act, I'll be totally sincere.

“The economy is getting better in Japan and I see a lot of Japanese married couples getting more active in deepening their relationships,” Yamana said. I'm not sure to understand the relationship between the economy and the deepening of japanese couples relationships. I don't think we have the same idea of what love is.

Wonder what these husbands are like on the other 364 days of the year. Not up to snuff I reckon.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

"It just reminded me how macho he used to be."

Yep. 8 years of Japan inc' ll do that to ya!

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Not too many people gathered, but it was still a quite interesting event

If they only organised an event for men who want to complain about their wives... then the turnout would be much greater.

I saw this, it happened in Hibiya park. Not too many people gathered, but it was still a quite interesting event :). I was just passing through the park, and at first I thought it was a party organized by some omiyai agency. Now I know what it was :)

Ha!! That's gold.

When clips of this comes on the news, I also think its a joke because one shout does not make a marriage. All of us who are married need to show our love to our spouses on a daily basis through our words and actions--starting with our thoughts!
