The one thing I find interesting is the amount of time Japanese patients are staying in the hospital. Is this being overly cautious? There are a number of other patients that could be admitted and helped, but if the beds are occupied already then there is nothing for these other people. Why not transition them to hotels used for people with lighter cases of the virus. Is this another reason why there is not that much testing, so as not to overburden the medical facilities?

both the government and the medical establishment are fault here,

doctors, nurses , medical staff including ambulance staff is on the front line of fighting this virus.

Unfortunately, due to incompetence of both the government and the medical establishment,

these brave people have to deal with this virus with less than adequate materials/equipment,

Japanese hospitals are notorious for.being overly cautious. The longer they keep patients in hospital, the more money they can claim from those patients' insurance.

The BBC made a video about the same hospital, which can be watched here:

Or, searched for, at YouTube under "Coronavirus: Tokyo hospitals trying to stay ahead - BBC News"

The active number of ventilators and ECMOs have recently levelled off into downward thanks to the decrease in the number of seriously ill patients on life support (due to either recovery or death).

Hopefully this trend would help relieve the pressure on the ICU services.

Agent X , I don’t know where you got your info, actually these hospitals will want you out as soon as possible, try having a surgery in Japan and see when they will discharge you, they don’t keep patients in wards or ICU for that long unless it really merits it

I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. When I had ACL surgery a Japanese hospital wanted me to stay in the hospital for 4 weeks post-op, and only agreed to discharge me at 2 weeks because my wife was 8 months pregnant.

Meanwhile, the average stay in the US, the UK, and Canada? 24-48 hours post-op, with many discharging to home the same day.

The healthcare and essential workers are really sacrificing a lot for Covid-19

Longer days, no more vacations, have to wear the uncomfortable virus protection suit all the time at work, have to avoid risking their loved ones getting infected at home (sometimes they don't even see their loved ones at all in-person), etc.

"Japanese doctors face a long, grueling campaign against the novel coronavirus even if the government extends a state of emergency for another month, a senior doctor said on Monday."

Because there is nothing enforceable, and it is a lip-service state of emergency. You can do anything and everything you could do without the so-called SOE, even forming your own private events. Then there is feigned shock and surprise that people are still doing it despite being asked not to. The golf driving ranges that were packed, as seen by aerial footage last week? Well, two have tested positive after having gone to them, so congrats to them. As long as the "laws" here remain toothless, and the government wishy-washy, the situation will remain hopeless.

the situation will remain hopeless.

How would you describe the situations of other countries then?

For example USA and South Korea

Is this the only hospital that will talk to the press?

St Marianna was also in the BBC talking about their response.

It is just risk avoidance. They generally follow standard period of hospitalization that is decided by MHLW.

From hospital's finance point of view, hospitalization longer than 2 weeks is a burden.

Blown out of meet proportion. One doctor, one anecdote. "Cared for dozens of patients", so is that 2,3,4,5 how many dozens? How many of them are recovered? C'mon Reuters give some facts and less anecdotes.

This is wrong. After 2 week, it is not profitable keeping patients in hospital.

Mark X, I hope you read from good source what is being done on the ground, if someone’s situation does no longer merit an ICU, they are moved from there almost immediately to make room for someone who situation warrants it, this is why they’ve even come up with the use of hotels, for those with very mild symptoms or who are almost recovering,

Fortunately there is still relatively a small number of serious cases in Japan.

As other countries recover it may become easier to acquire the necessary supplies
