He also expressed opposition to war, saying that “it’s not good.”

I think that is rather understating it.

So much for fighting to the last man. I am glad he disobeyed the emperor's orders.

Glad his story had a happy ending

he said the residents began leaving bananas and other food outside for him.

That brings tears to my eyes. I wish he, his daughter, and granddaughter had been able to extend their stay to allow for a their expedition.

I have been to a cave in Guam, where another Japanese soldier hid for twenty something years. It was an emotional experience.

After the atrocities the Japanese committed in Guam, this says a lot about the Guam people.

What a pathetic end to the IJA - to have it's dying soldiers left fruit by its victims.

It's too bad he couldn't have stayed until the weather improved and visited the cave, if that's what he wished. I'm glad he could get back, anyway, and tell others of his experiences and the horrors and futility of war. The powers that be don't want to hear it, but those of us that are human and see war for what it is sure do. And thanks to the people of Guam and the US soldiers who captured the man for treating him with dignity and not leaving him to die as the IJA, the emperor, and the nation at the time had.
