Yeah, but 40 or 100 fools are so few that they are not newsworthy. It's like if the press is trying to give the idea that nationalism is spreading to most of Japanese people. But I get the feeling most of people care more about the economy or Fukushima, rather than islands and historical disputes. Japanese people voted for Abe mainly for the economy. But now he is trying to take advantage of the situation to revamp nationalism in Japan. I hope Japanese people are able to see that this is bad.

It is a start of something new and definitely not bad. It has a deeper meaning that reflects the true vitality of Japan towards redemption. NO ONE will help rebuild Japan in her strive for recovery but it's very OWN PEOPLE. It's about time to think and react as ONE. It could be a minute start nevertheless, it is still highly regarded as a good SPARK.

We'll see what is more convenient for them. As for the other demonstration, Im sure immigration is unlikely to be granting visas to convicted criminals, Im not too sure what they are actually complaining about, foreigners as a very small 5% or so of the population don't seem to be over represented as far as I can see.

Again, this is why facts, reason and logic is so important, you can believe whatever you like, thought police aren't possible, but unless you have factual evidence or valid reasoning perhaps your belief is best left to yourself.

I don't believe Japan has taken ownership of its record in WW2, the way Germany has.

Why doesn't this article print the many racist signs and shouts against Koreans that were present in this demonstration? Why sanitize the truth?

I disagree. WWII destruction and women comfort centers in China, Korea are divine punishment to Japan as well. The God punished Japan but he decided that the execution's location is at China and Korea :D

Because Germany was partially under soviet control, so Americans couldn't "forgive" many war criminals like they did in Japan, for their own interests. Germany has been treated differently from Japan, so it was able to deal properly with its history.

These noisy, racist grubs were also spewing bile outside Fukushima station around 10am Saturday morning. To a man, they were all very overweight, short and bespectacled - but I guess in those quasi-military uniform with the flag on the shoulders, they feel tough. A couple of them peered through their thick glasses, slack-jawed, as I wished them a few pleasantries on my way to the train! The Korean newspaper should not have published what it did, regardless of opinion. Japan did NOT deserve the atomic bombings, despite all the nation's wrong doings. Had the bombs only killed military personnel that had committed atrocities, then perhaps you could call that 'divine punishment' or what have you, but in fact the bombs killed tens of thousands of innocents, and even POWs held prisoner.

That said, these wingers are really not doing much for their cause by what they are shouting out, and no one really takes them seriously.

I wouldn't call Japan a pawn, however, I think that if Japanese politicians put their foot in their mouths and want to talk tough to China and think that they can hold their own, then do so without the US backup. But since the US is sworn to protect Japan, they think they can say anything stupid without worrying about possible repercussions. This is why idiots like Hashimoto and Ishihara have the Gaul to say what they say, knowing that the US will be there to hold their hand. Personally, I wish Japan would be own it's own, because I doubt very much they would talk so much crap to piss off their neighbors if they were. Also, if Japan had not done what it did over 70 years ago, we wouldn't be in this mess. No one told Japan to do what it did. Japan chose this path and now it's America's fault?? Again, that is complete hogwash, Japan had EVERY opportunity to take ownership, yes, different country, but still Japan engaged in many heinous atrocities that Japan never wants to openly and publicly say, like Germany, we were wrong. I'm half German and I would see this all the time how German would do whatever it took to show deep sincerity about what it has done to its neighbors and not just apologize off the record or give money. If you talk to the average German, the majority of them will tell you Hitler was the worst thing that ever happened to Germany. You can sit down and have a decent conversation about the war. In Japan, that is almost impossible. Japanese history books gloss over the serious atrocities that were committed by the soldiers, even now, many Japanese think the Comfort women issue is a complete ruse. Nanking, denial, Constant visits to Yasakuni shrine, so indeed Japan is being treated differently. Imagine if Germans would say the Holocaust never happened. You are NOT doing any service, trying to pin Japan's problems on the US, it's A total farce.

Not militarily, no one thinks that, impossible, but emotionally, with its denials about the past, visits to Yasakuni and denying that Japan never bullied, raped or tortured, murdered people in other Asian countries is a form of mental harassment. I think Asia is saying the same thing to Japan "open your eyes."

Its a bit strange that the blame game is such a big issue for many readers. Is it as simple as; -You did wrong, now apologize and repent your sins? From my point of view this will never be resolved and it does not matter what Japan do or don't do. The blame game is about something else. Consider this: Firstly, post war Germany chose to act as they did because they were forced to. They experienced complete and utter destruction, probably because both sides had learned their lesson from ww 1. Secondly Germany was and is a western democracy, thus sharing much of the western ideals, norms and behaviors. Maybe their repenting action made sense to them. Now why would that apply to Japan? Is it your logic or some kind of universal (western) logic, similar to what we now from the old colonial days? The US and the allies chose to treat Japan differently than they did Germany at the end of the war. Why was that? It seems to me that the whole issue of the blame game may have started at that time. Thus a preliminary conclusion may well include several players and different agendas. Thirdly, I do not now of any warring country that has not committed horrible acts against military and civil population. Not in history and not at present. I think the definition of right and wrong in a situation of war may be shady, at best. Still it seems we have a need to think about right and wrong in these situations, a desperate attempt to civilize something that actually is the opposite of civilized. Give Japan some space on these issues and they will do what is right from their point of view. This may come as a surprise to some of you but I don't think that means starting a third world war. However Im not so sure about Chinas current intentions.

I'd really like to see the moderates from each country demonstrate. With enough visibility, maybe they could make the fringe look like the fools they are and persuade the average person that peaceful cooperation is the way to go.

Chinese intentions this days are the same as North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela and others, countries with politicians greedy politicians that use the nationalism to styr problems and maintain their selfish lifestyles. I've been in Cuba, there're only 2 channels and one of them is all day nationalism. I knew some politicians there, they had their own drivers, money, good vehicles and beautiful women. while their population was starving. nowhere to go. they stay looking at the sea since thats the only thing they do on sundays.

According to Wikipedia, o ut of the 126 million people who live in Japan, there are over 100,000 members of the uyoku dantai (right-wing groups) made up out of 1,000 diffrent groups. That's a very small number to the Japanese population.

Yes, but Japan is a nation that doesn't like change or to adapt to the outside worlds and needs, unlike South Korea or to a lesser extent China that are flooding the market with their products.most of the Cell phones in the states are: Samsung Cars: KIA, Daewoo, Hyundai. TV: Samsung, LG Japanese products are a dying breed. Why? They are being innovative and want what Japan did in the 80's , minus the mistakes that brought down the Japanese bubble economy. Also, a larger and larger number of Japanese are showing less interest in English. So if Japan really wants to emerge once again as a formidable foe, it has to make some very serious improvements and Japan has to remake itself.
