Japanese teacher apologizes for peeing on students’ futon during club retreat

For Japanese kids in extracurricular school activities, the gasshuku, or retreat, in an integral part of the experience. Usually taking place during summer vacation, the members of the club/team travel out of town to spend a few days practicing their sport or instruments, but most would say the real value of the trip is the bonds they form and the memories they make.

And it’s definitely true that the kendo club from Mie High School, in the town of Bungoono, Oita Prefecture, will remember this year’s gasshuku for a long time…but probably not for the sort of reason they’d expected to. This year’s summer retreat took place from July 10 to 12, with the club staying at a hotel in the nearby town of Bungotakada, accompanied by at least two coaches/teachers and one parent.

The group was staying in Japanese-style rooms with tatami reed floors and futon sleeping mats, with several kids to each room. Lights out was fairly early on the first night, sometime before 9:30, and while some kids probably slept soundly until morning, at least three were awoken in the middle of the night by one of their coaches urinating on one of their futons.

This was not, however, a planned lesson about how kendo athletes, as the successors to the traditions of samurai swordsman, should always be on guard. After the students went to sleep, the coaches and accompanying parent decided to crack open some drinks in a separate room. The drinking session lasted from about 9:30 to 11 p.m., with one coach, a man in his 50s, putting away six or seven beers, by his recollection.

Downing a six pack in an hour and a half is bound to make you sleepy, and the coach dozed off. But all that booze was both the cause of his sleepiness and the reason for the end of it, because he woke up at around 2 in the morning with an overwhelming urge to pee. So he got up and went to heed the call of nature, opening the sliding door to a room where three third-year male students were sleeping and sending out a stream of urine onto one boy’s futon, which also moistened the kid’s T-shirt.

Shocked at what was happening, the boys started shouting, but the teacher was still sleepy and/or intoxicated enough that he didn’t respond to them, and instead shuffled off to the hotel’s bath for a soak after doing his business. When morning came, the students spoke with their chaperones. The teacher who urinated on their futon apologized, and has since also apologized to the students’ parents, saying “I was still half-asleep and mistook their room for the bathroom. I am incredibly sorry.” He also paid a 7,000-yen “cleaning fee” to the hotel, but we’re hoping the management decides to put the money towards just buying a new futon instead.

One would think the presence of tatami flooring, which you’ll never find in a Japanese bathroom, should have tipped the teacher off as to where he was, especially since shoes aren’t worn inside traditional Japanese hotels, so he should have been able to feel what sort of floor he was standing barefoot on. Then again, copious amounts of alcohol don’t do your powers of perception any favors.

The incident was reported to the school by an anonymous phone call on July 15, and the teacher was suspended from participating in the kendo club’s activities for 15 days. He’s since returned to the club, but not without a reprimand from the school’s principal, who said “His actions were inappropriate for someone in charge of our students. I am awaiting the judgement of the prefectural board of education [regarding what to do with the teacher].”

Nothing like responsible adult supervision of children. I am guessing he is a screaming Alcholholic well known for peeing in cupboards, themselves. He needs supervision way more than the kids.

He damn well be paying a hell of a lot more than this!

Probably thinks the "oh I was drunk, I'm sorry" defense is enough!

putting away six or seven beers, by his recollection.

And a few more.

You need to be paralytic to do this and more to the point, if you are in charge of children, you shouldn't be this drunk.

17 ( +17 / -0 )

Oh nooo... Oh no no no noooo... poor kid waking up to the realities of a golden shower. Man, that's trauma, child abuse on purpose or not...how can he even show his face in front of the student, and that student will have this memory for life...this is a SAD story.

Dock him a months pay and have him work a month also at a laundry cleaning sheets from old folks homes.

He hasn’t resigned? Where is the samurai spirit?

After 2AM? No you dont, and 6 or 7 beers in an hour and a half is hardly a lot to drink, depending upon the person of course. Consider it takes about an hour, per beer, to get the alcohol out of your system, after two AM, he may have had the equivalent of maybe 2 beers worth of alcohol in his system at the time.

I will say one thing though, I bet this isnt the first time he took a piss where he shouldnt be taking one!

Buy I agree, he shouldn't be drinking while he is chaperoning kids!

4 ( +9 / -5 )

That's pretty sick. He's drinking that much beer while chaperoning? What would happen if one of the kids had a problem during the night. Obviously he needs some help with his alcoholism.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

quercetum - He hasn’t resigned?

He hasn’t been fired and charged with assault and public indecency?

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Ha ha ha Pissed up pisser

Sounds like a Greg Davies anecdote.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

To be remembered as the ‘urinating teacher’ would see me change jobs in a flash...

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The guy should have been fired on the spot, and should be facing at least one lawsuit. If he had just wandered in at night, HONESTLY half-asleep, and done what he did, I can see the embarrassment on top of the apologies being a start. But let's face it, he was drunk. When is society here going to learn that drinking is not an acceptable excuse? Why were the chaperones drinking at all? (I can understand why they would want to, but not why they actually would).

9 ( +15 / -6 )

This is gross for the kids, but the guy doesn't deserve to be fired. The guy may actually hate kendo and only be involved at the club because he's the only teacher who can do it. He was on this trip as a volunteer, and in my experience, parents and coaches who go away on a club trip usually have a piss-up partially to make the loss of (yet another) weekend slightly more bearable. Clubs in Japan only exist thanks to big sacrifices from teachers and parents, some of whom are more willing than others.

If the guy is fired. I strongly doubt other teachers will be queuing up to take charge of this kendo club.

Sounds like a Greg Davies anecdote.

Yeah, it could be an Inbetweeners storyline!

No. Fire him from the school, and do not allow him to work with children again.

Japanese teacher apologizes for peeing on students’ futon during club retreat

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we've found it. A brand new sentence.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Folks lets not forget the REST of the story, I be the other teachers, coaches, parent ALSO drank too much......maybe not but surely THAT should be investigated also......idiots all round & the leaky guy walks away with no penalty.......typical!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

No big deal

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I've done that a few times when really really tired.

I've pissed all over my own shoes after opening a closet door and once at my then girlfriend's apartment managed to pee in the bath and not the toilet. Nothing perverted or intentional, just fatigue and a full bladder. Very embaressing in the morning as you have absolutely no idea and except the wet shoes or yellow stuff in the basin you'd deny it.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

You need to be paralytic to do this and more to the point, if you are in charge of children, you shouldn't be this drunk.

it's more fatigue than booze. speaking from experience. Did it once after only drinking only one chuu nama.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

When you have teachers are this incompetent, urine trouble!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Well, everyone make mistake. I think the shame is already stuck on him, so punishing him any further would be overdoing it. The students and him might get along. Because they actually let him sleep till morning. No need to ruin a teacher life when there is no harm done. He got suspended and pay for the damage. I would probably laugh it off and considered it a unique memory. These are third year high school boys. Considered it a goodbye joke before they graduate.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Frankly, anyone supervising students should not be drinking. Suppose there was a fire and the teacher was too drunk to deal with it.

(Hey, no jokes about how the teacher could have put the hypothetical fire out.)

4 ( +5 / -1 )

@Speed

Unless you were the one being urinated on?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Big pisser.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The principal or someone else should take him to an AA meeting and be his sponsor. Daily alcohol tests, he has a problem he can be saved if those around him cared to help. At his age 50/50 as he will push back. But someone should try. You don't know you need help sometimes until you are told.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Kimoi!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Peeing? What a joke!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The fact that your supervising, and have children in your care make your responsible! having a drink is ok, but getting totally drunk is not acceptable and is totally irresponsible. As for peeing on a futon, that what happens when you loose control, as for the correct punishment, well he should pay for a new futon full stop, and possibly a tatami mat and any other damage he's caused. then fine him, may be even stand up infront of the whole school and apologise for his mistake, and then go around to the Childs home and yet again apologise to his family, and it should be noted on his school records, IF, this ever happens again he will be instantly fired from his job.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Geez and he is still teaching,,wt

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Aren't those teachers with special school trips "technically on the clock 24/7?" In other words, drink only after the last kid goes home?

Well, there's Japan for you. And no, he won't lose his job either.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Hmm ... We have just witnessed history in the making.

Instead of Miyamoto Musashi's nemesis, Sasaki Kojiro's famed 'tsubame-gaeshi' (slicing of swallows in mid-air) technique, we now have the 'tatami-gaeshi' technique.

It cuts through t-shirts too.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"tatami reed floors and futon sleeping mats"

Surely that should be tatami mats and futon sleeping quilts.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The real crime is not the peeing. Drunk people do stupid things. The point is he was that out of his mind drunk while in charge of other people's children. I think it highly unlikely the guy doesn't know how he gets when drunk, with some incidents in the past, yet got drunk anyway. I am a pretty forgiving person but this is just right out. He was sober when he started drinking so not accepting excuses. I agree with garypen. He should be sent packing.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

I've done that a few times when really really tired.

Perhaps a good time to check your prostate

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This is Japan. No big deal. Alcoholism is part of the culture. No harm done. Poor guy. No reproach for this. Sick!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

At least he didn't take a massive dump.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I. Am. Speechless.

Really?!

Well, I simply don't drink alcoholic drinksl at all. Never done, (hopefully) never will.

What do u think would happen if someone like me drank all that?

How do u know the teacher is not like me?

A very good friend of mine did just that; inside the wife's favourite (expensive) ceramic cooking pot.

She wasn't amused, I can tell you that.

A few drinks is fair, say four cans or whatever, but not the level he drank to.

This is disgusting behavior. Fire this teacher.

Another thing to consider, doesn't this also count as 'indecent exposure' maybe? Either way, peeing / 'golden shower' is inexcusable and it can even be defined as an assaultive action. And it's disgusting to say the least.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Another teacher, being and doing teacher stuff, they think is normal or acceptable, while the rest of the population realize they are sick demented twisted weird types, ever met a teacher who is normal?? Nah didnt think so they are all wierdo types with some underlying issue.

Teachers are in need of help its glaringly obvious , if they had much substance they wouldnt be teaching, but its what they are teaching is the problem. Always has been and always will be.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@yiasy, this is not a joke, how would you react if this was your child that had been peed on? I think my answer is a balanced response to the problem, most posters want him sacked. what is your response to this problem? sack him? let him off? do you feel this is acceptable behaviour?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Just the type perv you’d want Chaperoning your kids.

This reads more like a judgey opinion piece from the pages of a student union magazine than a news report. Based on that, I'll reserve my judgement on how the school's handling things.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

When morning came, the students spoke with their chaperones

so chaperones are staff other than teachers? or what? in any case, good job the kids didn't have this joker as a 'chaperone'. and chaperone or not, pretty shabby behaviour on his part to get smashed on duty. oh dear!
