Japanese woman missing in Canada

A 30-year-old Japanese woman who has been studying in Vancouver, Canada, has been missing since Sept 8, Vancouver police said Wednesday.

According to police, the missing woman is Natsumi Kogawa from Aomori Prefecture. She has been studying English in Vancouver since May. Fuji TV quoted local police as saying Kogawa was last seen on Sept 7. She contacted her Canadian friends through the messaging app LINE on the morning of Sept 8. Kogawa’s friends said they were unable to reach her after that and she has not replied to any messages since then.

Police said Kogawa's room in the shared house where she resided showed no signs of having been ransacked, but her backpack, iPhone and wallet were missing.

A Facebook page has been set up to seek help in locating Kogawa's whereabouts.

Can't they track the GPS in her iphone?

This being Canada, I doubt it.

Hope they find her soon, and safe.

One week is a long time to disappear. I am not optimistic.

I never like Vancouver - too idyllic. I always thought there had to be something sinister lying in the underbelly of that picturesque city. Being there conjured the movie Hot Fuzz.

The Mounties always get their man. so fingers crossed in this case too.

I hope this young woman is found and that there is some good reason for her disappearance. I really hope the police can find her.

First day I arrived in Vancouver I saw an undercover drug bust in Gastown. The perp gets tackled and out flew a big bag of white powder. Anyways, like the commentator above said, Vancouver is far from the wonderful image Japanese people have of it. One of my Japanese friends has even asked me if I've been to Vancouver while holding up a pic of Banff. (we can thank J-travel agencies for that misrepresentation)

In any case, I hope this girl is found alive and uninjured.

Considering she is a 30 year old Japanese woman, presumably single, on her last chance at study abroad or possibly, working holiday, I reckon she's just run off somewhere with a fella. I hope I'm right and she shows up safe in the next few days.

Went hiking in the mountain and...... Vancouver is not as idealistic as it seems but it is still far safer than some part of New York or many parts of the world (I recall came out of the hotel and saw a woman in her early 20s all sweaty, red eyes and looked dazed. Then, I knew she was an addict.) Same as when you travel to any other places, be very aware of your surrounding- though some places/countries you need to pay extra attention if you really need to to go there.

Hey guys

I live in Vancouver.

It is a picturesque city. Consistently voted one of the most livable city in the world. It's really surprising that this girl is missing. We don't have a lot of murders etc. In the longer article about her, it notes that she frequently goes downtown and to my area (Joyce station) to visit friends. I havnt seen here :(

We have thousands of Japanese ESL and working holiday students here. It's spreading like crazy here on social media. Eventually, someone who has seen something will say something.

She went missing between 1120am and 430pm i believe... that's prime daylight hours. I dont think she got abducted in broad daylight. Maybe someone tricked her? i'm worry about her

JT of course if her back pack, iPhone and wallet is missing wouldn't you think thos belongings are with her? Perhaps she befriended some stranger she trusted and let's hope for the best.

Track her phone. It's Vancouver not Yukon.

All public info is here. Her "Iphone" is not turned on... Here is a compelte "timeline" imeline we confirmed (PST, also reported to Police) 9/7(Wed)

13:00 to 14:00 Calligraphy lesson in Vancouver 16:30 to 17:30 info session in downtown Vancouver After 17:50 Studying at Library downtown Vancouver arrived home around 19:30 Burnaby Midnight: exchanged messages with friend 9/8(THU) 11:21 Exchanged messages by Line app with her Canadian friend. They had plan to meet at 17:30 in front of her house. 16:30 The friend needed to change the time from 17:30 to 18:30, so sent her a message(by Line), but no response, no read sign(so far). 18:30 The friend arrived in front of her house and wait for her, but never shown up. From what we gather. She disappeared sometime from 11:21 to 16:30. We are strongly interested in her Line app conversation history on Sep 8th.

We are strongly interested in her Line app conversation history on Sep 8th.

As far as a I recall, Line is end-to-end encryption, so without her phone, they won't be able to get that.

Rather than foul play, it's more likely that she's decided to disappear or even kill herself as the suicide rate in Canada is about five times higher than the murder rate, and even higher in Japan. Sadly Japanese women who have gotten themselves in the news in Canada harmed themselves or others. Google Rie Fujii (Calgary) and Ayano Tokumasu (Niagra Falls) as sad examples.

" Rather than foul play, it's more likely that she's decided to disappear or even kill herself "

Completely groundless speculation. There is no information about her that says anything about being suicidal, and if decided "disappear" for whatever reason she would have made some preparations.

Occams razor says this is either an accident or a crime.

It's coming on two weeks now and still no updates at all.

Right outside my condo on the telephone pole there was a color printout taped to it with her face and missing persons title.

Lots of pictures downtown too.

This is so mind boggling....she wasn't some gullible 19 year old first time out of Japan exchange student...she's 30 years old, an experienced traveler, disappeared in a major urban city...in the day time. No word at all since...

I hope that she is OK...

Surveillance pictures have found her with an unknown male. It's on the facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/findnatsumikogawa/

apparently he's been spotted at a japanese language exchange meetup. He used this website http://www.meetup.com/ja-JP/ESL-Conversation-Classes/

there is a pic of him...i think he'll be found shortly
