When I was a kid people complained kids played video games too long.

Before that it was watching TV makes you stupid.

One generation is always complains about another generation.

The music/TV/computer games didn't do your homework for you and it was generally possible to put those things down and go to bed without FOMO.

it is simple put down the phone, and vote pretty please.

Just take the time its your future.

Do you set limits?

Yeah, actually depending on the app. Things like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and other social media sites have a total 3-hour limit. But Line is left limitless since she primarily uses it to talk to or text friends, which I have no problem with. Kind of like those long phone calls teenagers used to make back in the day.

My JHS kid spends about two hours chatting on Line - phone and video calls - and a couple of hours watching the stupidist things you can possibly imagine on TikTok. So yeah, this survey matches my kid's amount online per day.

These kids have to be getting dumber watching TikTok though.

When I was a little kid in the 1980s, we could spend at least that much time reading comic books and watching TV. Same thing.

Our children (5 and 8) have had no contact with any social media and they don't even know what it is.

No TV or games except for maybe 30 minutes a week. They are both ferocious readers, going through dozerns of books a week, they draw, paint, build things and make up creative imaginary stories that they play out together. They are both very active in sports, rugby, tennis, soccer, gymnastics, karate, and horseback riding, riding their bikes and scooters every day; they play musical instruments; and my daughter does ballet.

They are smart, confident, outgoing, and socially and academically advanced for their ages, but almost no internet and screen time.

I could go on but you get the point. We know a lot of kids who do none of this and spend most of their time in front of a screen.

So 19 hours wasting time. Seriously I think in a few years we will look back at this as an addiction that society had to overcome like opioids.

None of these concerns are new. The Japanese equivalent of "the Devil finds work for idle hands" goes 小人は閑居して、不善を為す (shojin wa kankyo shite, fuzen wo nasu). Literally, ordinary mortals, having nothing to do, will do evil.

Saw my son's YouTube history last week (he's 12) and it was some of the dumbest things I've ever seen, lol.

lol. Now I have coffee on my desk from laughing. For real.

Oh, I agree. Younger generations attention span has been crushed. They cannot focus on reading a book or watching a full film anymore.

Modern movies suck, I struggle to maintain focus too.

And what do you expect? Big Tech has as many faces as everything else. One face is the voracious endeavors for profit, the other is the wonderful things it provides for humanity.

Who can foresee the results before they present themselves?

Humans, naturally, tend to focus on the negative aspects of everything, a genetic legacy imprinted in their DNA.

There is no solution because the problem is a personal and very partial perception. I entice you to think about this.

My Mum would kick me out of the house to play footie or similar if I watched TV in the daytime.

So glad I grew up in the pre mobile phone era.

I phones I call "conversation killers "

I don't think it's so much the time, but the content. Saw my son's YouTube history last week (he's 12) and it was some of the dumbest things I've ever seen, lol.

The latest generations are severely addicted and need help.

I spend hours online each day because I work online. And so will today's kids when they leave school.

1950s-1960s. Kids are spending too much time listening to music/the radio.

1970s-1980s. Kids are spending too much time watching TV.

1980s-1990s. Kids are spending too much time playing computer games.

1990s-today. Kids are spending too much time on their smartphones.

1950's-today. People are worrying too much about whatever moral panic is being hyped by the media.

Yet, to my surprise, many of them (I work with) don't know what chatGPT or Google Scholar is.

I don't know about you but I can't screw around at work and if I stayed up all night with devices I would be a complete zombie in the morning. The latest generations are severely addicted and need help.

Most people who work can't goof off either. It's a priority issue, really. I'm a gamer. Play nearly every day. But it's no different than my parents watching TV as soon as they get home. The only part I think that's drastically changed is the need for constant visual stimulation. It is a real problem. I even find myself watching a movie while playing a game. But again, as long as I put family, work, and my health before every thing else, I see no harm in gaming or using the internet to enjoy things.

How many hours do their parents spend staring at their devices? And how many hours do their grandparents spend in front of a TV? Probably the same or more.
