Alphaape, entertainment by geisha is so expensive that most people can't afford it very often. It's not anything that would interfere with a marriage either. 'Hours on end' of geisha entertainment is not an option for many. If you were talking about time spent at hostess bars your argument would apply...

Despite their image in the West as little more than prostitutes, geisha are in fact highly skilled women who dance, play musical instruments and entertain their clients with games and conversation.

I've had many discussions about this. So a married man can pay for the company of a woman other than his wife to dance and entertain him, and conversate with him. But can't you get the same treatment at a strip club?

I think many Westerners (including myself) equate a Geisha to a prostitute because of the fact that if you are going out to be entertained, and spend money on different women other than the wife that is like paying or buying a service. I saw a special on Geisha's once that showed a university professor and his wife talking about his visits to geishas and how his wife thought it showed her friends that they had enough money to spend on such things that it elevated her status. I guess if that is what you want to believe who am I to stand in your way.

But I guess the somewhat Western idea that if you are married you are to at least spend those hours that you are out conversating with other women building a better relationship with your wife and not just some stranger. Those hours on end spent with other women after working and not interfacing at home, pretty much lead to either the marriage being an unhappy situation for the wife, and when the guy finally retires he finds that he has nothing in common with his wife since he spent time conversating with geishas and other women and not with his wife. They are strangers in the same home.

I will ask this, why don't they take a survey of married Japanese women and ask what they really think of their husbands spending time with some other woman just out singing and dancing and conversating. I am curious as to what the results would be and I would like to know if men who frequent these places like the idea of their wives out hanging with other men doing the same thing.

Shimoda's a beautiful place. If this will attract some tourists, fine. An apprenticeship of years used to be required, though. I doubt that a geisha can be trained in 6 months.

I forgot to add this to my previous post. I have read a book titled "Memoirs of Geisha" that was once on a best seller book list for a long time on the NY Times. I highly recommend this book if you are truly interested in Japanese culture.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a novel by American author Arthur Golden, published in 1997. The novel, told in first person perspective, tells the fictional story of a geisha working in Kyoto, Japan, before and after World War II. It contains many Japanese terms for aspects of the geisha culture, occasionally using the Kyoto counterparts.

This is one of dying culture of Japan. Am glad the money is well spent to pass it on to the next generation of Japan.

I'm from American and I can say that a lot of people do think of Geisha in a "prostitute" like manner. I on the other hand, know that they aren't, or at least not all of them. I love their culture and history, I even did a research paper on them for school! :D I always try to tell people the true meaning of a Geisha.

Hate to break the news - but "foreign" geisha have been around for ages - Chinese, Korean... and even British (one of whom wrote an awesome book about the world of Geisha). You must be devastated to know that your perfect image of Japan has been corrupted, Bartholomew Harte!

I am not quite sure if it is such an achievement to see to it that this kind of "art" has to be prolonged, where the traditional view that woman are minor than men is rather obvious. Although many will hasten and tell me he opposite, I do not trust these words.

if the 'art' is only racial Japanese then it's not much of an art that is so insecure that it's dying off. Reminds me of traditional Japanese music (Shamisen etc). Japanese are not interested in their history yet "foreigners" take classes in learning these arts. If it's an art then it shouldn't matter.

Adding a racial tone to recovering an art can't be justified. It would take a big leap of confidence to accept anyone interested. Like other arts and music styles.

My post is not very popular. Calling a spade a spade never is. Ask your friends overseas what a geisha is. I bet they will say prostitute and/or give very low brow and clueless descriptions. As former trailer trash I know I used to and I know why. But I learned.

I prefer the under 18 舞妓 (maiko) who are apprentice geisha in Kyoto. You have to be at least a junior high school graduate to be a maiko in Kyoto under the welfare laws regarding minors. The ones under 18 are only found in Kyoto. If you are interested, you can see them at the red light districts of Gionkobu, Miyagawacho, Gionhigashi, Bontocho and Kamishichiken in Kyoto.

Only 3 women? I am sure that will go a long way to in preserving the tradition, not!

Most women these days would have a very difficult time living up to the standards of the geisha lifestyle as I understand it is quite a lot of torture, not unlike foot binding or elongating the neck. I hope they will relax the rules enough to let them wear wigs and at least be able to sleep on a normal pillow.

Make sure you teach them how to point their toes.

Most women in this country can't even do that. Ballet could help as well.

Maybe using the word "entertainer" would have helped. Not that your average plebian can really understand the concept of having enough pocket change to pay a woman to dance for you either, anymore than they would go to a live public performance. The only private performance they want from a women involves you know what, thus the misunderstanding.
