Junior high school students in Japan are generally well-behaved, though occasionally a few naughty ones may slip through the disciplinary system and wreak juvenile havoc.
It seems one junior high school in Owariasahi City, Aichi Prefecture ran into a nasty case recently when a female assistant teacher found her soup bowl filled to the brim with soy milk soup during school lunch. Since it was too much for her, the teacher poured half the bowl back into the huge communal container that the soup was served from.
Little did she know that it contained more than just food.
She felt an odd prickling sensation in her mouth after lunch, and thus proceeded to the school nurse’s office. It was there that the truth came to light: she had consumed an unknown amount of laxative.
It wasn’t long before another three students from her eighth grade class reportedly fell ill to the same cause. Upon further investigation a student confessed to crushing commercial laxative tablets and sprinkling it into the soy milk soup as a nasty prank meant for the assistant teacher. But since she poured half of it back into the communal container at the start, it also inadvertently affected the three students who went back for seconds.
The culprit has since apologized for the incident, but Japanese netizens remain furious:
“Won’t he get arrested?”
“If you are really sorry, then you should take the laxative yourself and understand how it feels.”
“When you lace food with drugs, it’s no longer a prank. The culprit should bear the cost of medical fees involved.”
“It’s clearly a crime. Stop giving special treatment just because they are kids. They have to learn the rules of society.”
“This is terrible. He’d have to be a psychopath if he thought it was a prank.”
The teacher was promptly rushed to hospital, and is currently making smooth recovery. Had she not poured half away and instead drank the entire bowl of soup, things might have turned out very differently.
We can only assume that the school has dealt appropriate disciplinary action, although seeing how a high school principal skirted the issue of a student violently assaulting his teacher, we can’t really be too sure.

That's terrifying. It is totally crime, and the school or government should give him something punishment to make him realize what he has done. If they just forgave him because of this age, he will do something bad things in the future.

In my junior high school some guys called themselves the Warriors after that late 1979 film. They spray painted obscene graffiti slamming the principal (who was a total jerk). No one ratted on them. No one. In the 10th grade English class some boorish rube put a little frog in our teacher's briefcase. A real dumb prank.

"We can only assume...we can’t really be too sure..." What's with the royal "we"? Silly writing. Is this written by teens?

Also, watch out for those Halloween chocolate chip cookies! Lol

A good prank is intelligent, funny and harmless. A good prank can be enjoyed by all. This act is is passive aggression. It is thoughtless and irresponsible and dangerous. Not that many degrees from a criminal act.

Had this done to me in my first year in secondary school... they laughed and told me I had joined the Fellowship of the Ring... I was ill for about three days. Big laugh... not.
It seems like teachers and teaching staff are legitimate targets for the school 'comedians'... how long before a 'prank' kills someone?

Who are you kidding.

Yeah, I realized this immediately after posting and then couldn't find a way to delete my post. Thanks.
I still find it gross to pour from your bowl back into a communal pot, even if you haven't touched anything in your bowl yet. It's like taking a carrot and dipping it and then taking a bite, then taking the other side of the carrot and dipping it in again. Not technically a double-dip, but still poor form.
chisineko
Could the full bowl have been life threatening event if so then a potential manslaughter event was in the making. Bit of a reach for a childhood prank. Some shame due the kid's family and a reason for bring one's own lunch.

What? Nowhere on the article says she had any of the above. And two, nowhere it says she ingested any of the soup before returning half into the container.
Meals are served by a small group of students. Sometimes they serve in excess which is why, right before starting to eat, the students who think they were served too much return the excess to the container. And after that, the students who want more add more into their plates themselves. I'm pretty sure they do that in every single public school across the nation.

2nd paragraph:
Since it was too much for her, the teacher poured half the bowl back into the huge communal container that the soup was served from.
She wouldn't be sick if she didn't eat any.
Goodlucktoyou
So the teacher “the teacher poured half the bowl back into the huge communal container that the soup was served from”. She should go to jail and never be allowed to teach children again. A child may play a prank, but a teacher entrusted with the care of parents children should know better. If she had norovirus or shingatta or HIV, to put back for innocent children is not right, period.

Sounds like some of the crap my friends and I used to pull when we were in Jr. High (maybe not to this extreme though). I never worried much what the school would do to me but I sure did worry what my dad (rest his soul) would do to me once he found out. It was never abusive but he made sure in no uncertain terms I would not repeat my mis-adventure and it usually worked.
It is interesting when we are young we find some of these things amusing (and some of them are) but we are ignorant to the potential unintended consequences.
If the culprit's dad is like mine was I do not think we need to worry about him doing this again.

The female assistant teacher may have felt that she was unawarely put on a poisonous drug. Fortunately, it was laxatives. Nevertheless, the naughty boy should be raked across the coals.

Kids should be forced to clean sumo wrestlers latrines at the Kyushu basho.
AgentX
Exactly. These kids get off really lightly for their hijinks. Usually just ignored to keep the 'wa' unless it's something so serious that cannot be ignored like this.
I agree. If they are not held properly accountable, they grow up as self-entitled sociopaths that have no concept of taking responsibility. You don't have to look far in society here to find them in senior positions...

If I was that teacher, I would totally sue the parents.
DaDude
Where I come from it would have been a long suspension or expulsion.
Strangerland
If she hadn't yet eaten any, why would that be gross?
Toasted Heretic
Larking about at school, we all did that. However, the punishment back in my day... I dread to think.
Glad to hear everyone was relatively ok after the "prank".
kohakuebisu
Coconut H20.
The article says she poured it back "at the start", so presumably no, she hadn't touched it. The kids must have dished it up for her and given her big helping.
I'm all for kids being kids but they must have added an amount of laxative that exceeds the line where things like this can be treated as hijinx. People getting ill and going to hospital is not funny.
OssanAmerica
Glad someone else caught that too. lol

Wait a second, the teacher poured soup from her bowl that she had already eaten back into a communal pot? Gross!

Feed him a few large spoons of Castor Oil.

Its a bit late fro summer SALT’S.

Don't know if forcibly having a bowl evacuation counts as attempted murder. That would have to be one hell of an evacuation. Never trusted these mass lunches at schools less so now.
toshiko
Attempted murder? zArrestt him and throw in jail.
kawabegawa198
Indeed, why not? There are so many ineffective parents around these days (go to any shopping centre in Japan on the weekend) that, if the parents are incapable of discipline, the teachers should be able to pick up the slack.
lucabrasi
That's one well-equipped and knowledgeable school nurse. Can't have been especially easy to identify the problem so readily.

Sounds like a movie in the making.

Sure, and why not bring back corporal punishment ?
Do kids and serial killers get the same treatment nowadays ?

Make the culprits clean the bathroom after the teacher wrecks it.

Instead of bowing and apologizing, the parents will blame the school staff
