Kagawa kicks off 'Udon Prefecture' project

Kagawa Prefecture on Monday began a project to attract more visitors to the region. The theme of Kagawa's new project is "Udon Prefecture Time Traveling Story."

Kotohira-cho will recreate the Showa Era years 30~40 (1955~1965) and Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu city will recreate the Edo era. During the project period until Dec 1, retro trains will operate at the two sites.

The use of "udon" in the project's name goes back to 2011 when prefectural officials held a PR event to "change" the prefecture's name to Udon Prefecture because it has become so famous for its udon noodles.

There is now an official Udon Prefecture homepage.

Bland, unimaginative, targets only domestic tourism, single attraction marketing. Typical waste of money. If they developed real tourist infrastructure, gave tax breaks to local businesses and targeted interntl. market as well, they might just make meaningful inroads into a struggling industry.

I wish them success in the Udon Prefecture project.
