How about we make this 10 day holiday permanent?! Yeah! And make them all paid holidays even for part-time workers! Rename it "GW and a Half".

Great, 10 days of traffic jams and fully booked hotels and flights. So the reality is that you have to stay home for 10 days watching the new guy on tv again and again and again.

Too many national holidays in Japan. On top of them, we have holidays of New Years Days in Jan., Golden Week in May, Obon Holidays in Aug. and Year End Holidays in Dec. Who says Japanese work too many days? Americans work a lot more days. I am worried about my stocks when Tokyo stock market closes ten days while other markets in the world are opening.

Masako-sama looks quite unhealthy. I worry that the added pressures of being empress will exasperate her condition.

Make it permanent as a national holiday week. Japan needs more holidays

These are holidays in name only. The only people who will have them off are public servants. Banks will have to open sometime during that 10 days. All stores, restaurants, theme parks, movie theaters will be open. While there will be no classes, and those classes will have to be made up later, schools will still have club activities. This is just to make things seem more grandiose for the new emperor!

Awesome, premium Holidays that have to be made up for, with premium overwork. Love it. Got to love it.

Wonderful. Some holiday more than one single day... once every 2000 years...

But, they’ve actually only added two days to the existence holiday period. I’m curious about how many companies will acknowledge this and give their workers a ten day break. Or, will it become another ‘premium Friday initiative.

So, its a Law, companies will be fined for not following it right?

the company I work for has its own calendar, whenever i ask the company why i have to work on holidays they politely explain that they follow their own calendar, and that national holidays are just guidelines.

Why do you need holidays? You have a job! You don’t need a life! Your job is your life! TIJ!

Wow, its true what they say: some people will complain about anything. It is 10 days off at the most beatiful time of the year, just enjoy it!!

I wish I can get paid for that extended holiday. This is just going to hurt me and my family financially. The laws are pointless if it does make the black companies pay the employees for this forced time off.

Educator60, while what you write is true, these people are either paid overtime for working on National holidays, or are given time off at a different time. But not so in Japan.

1 or 100 days off, Japanese still think and stress about work. 3 full days really off would be a start.

When I explain to people that postal service works on 1st January for instance, they just can't believe it.

Combinis all open, etc.

Only half of country, the lucky part in fact, follow the rules.

Banzai !

So running the holiday through another holiday, and weekends which many have off, and they market it as 10 days straight?

I've got some tartan paint for sale

Not everyone will get those days off... and I wonder if they who are effected, will be allowed to take 10 days off during the rest of the year. This could be interesting.
