This is troubling. A Japanese entity of a Foreign Company giving away Personal data to some unknown entities along with chat histories and personal data... and all they do is say "Sorry"... Sorry but NO. Line Corp needs to be either put out of business or really feal the heat of Japanese P'PI regulations and if not, the then the Japanese Governments regulations over Personal Privacy are just useless.

Put Line out of business in Japan.

People put so many idiotic videos and photos of themselves on social media thinking it will make them a celebrity without any shame and not a single thought of privacy but these same people whine and complain so much if there is any form of data leak! Humans are becoming bigger imbeciles each day thanks to social media!

Don't panic. Just because data is stolen, it doesn't mean it is worthwhile or possible for hackers to exploit it. Most individuals (and many organisations) aren't worth targeting. Much of the data held is available in the public domain anyway. Most personal data held by organisations is encrypted, and as such, its theft isn't a problem.

Companies can protect themselves by keeping intranets offline, airgapping data, using encryption and paying IT staff enough cash to get competent ones who follow the latest security issues.

Individuals can use services like PayPal rather than debit and credit cards, shop from ebay and Amazon rather than individual company websites, use different, long passwords for each service, and never open an e-mail that looks slightly fishy. Anyone who asks you for personal information in a phone call should be considered a con artist - just hang up.

Most hacks just cause short term inconvenience for all concerned. Entities should really have a Plan B allowing them to 'rip and replace' hardware and go old skool using paper and carbon-based life forms on phones while things get fixed, to keep their services running.

If what they report is correct, basically user names, age, gender and some usage details, well... then guess what? If you've been surfing the web and making purchases online, everyone and their brother already knows who you are and in detail. As much detail as that which was leaked. If bank related info was compromised that is a different story. I don't see this as a big deal, but yes, of course they still need to tighten security which may prove to be difficult since they share systems with other companies.

My credit card details are with Amazon and PayPal only. I've registered the details with other sites and been burned thrice so if I ever need to register the details with another site I have a credit card I can use that will show up clearly.

Otherwise, what does 'personal details' mean? Remember when we had phone books with our name, address and phone number in it?

The leaked data did not contain information regarding bank accounts, credit cards or chat messages in the Line app, a popular social communications tool in Japan.

I have heard the same message from other companies before. Personal data are hacked/leaked, but never the credit card or bank information !!!

Anyway, I do not do Line so this is not an issue this time, but I am quite sure my personal data have already been hacked or leaked.
