"With a strong resolve.... we plan to make the people responsible PAY -- 20% of their basic salaries, not bonuses... never bonuses... for a couple months. That's worth the kid's life for sure."

Based on my very very short work experience with Japanese companies, it is almost certain for a weak minded staff to be pushed over the edge and commit suicide.

Maybe if staff take too long to do their job they are ripping off the company. Amazon has great policies like filming staffs toilet breaks and tagging their movements.

it is maybe possible, staff enjoy free air con and internet access to play games and social media. Maybe car parking is free too?

Let’s see here. The CEOs pay is 170MJPY a year. I take it that they use the Japanese salary system, meaning divided over 18 months.

50% of his pay was withheld for 2 months, so just under 10MJPY.

cost of doing business, I guess.

I'm glad the CEO and other muckety-mucks are being penalized for their attitudes and behavior. There's no excuse treating any employee like that.

@kyushubill

I don't think anyone is saying that. I'm saying I'd be naive to think the consequences of me being brusque vs a Japanese coworker are the same. In 2 out of the 3 workplaces I've been at it in Japan, it has been much more acceptable for Western employees to leave on time vs Japanese employees for example.

"A japanese Guy or Woman will never say, what you or me said, to a superiour."

Wrong, I've seen many a Japanese person stand up to idiot bosses.

With this kind of accountability, this tragedy is bound to repeat itself. Absolutely disgusting.

Cut their pay by 99% for a year. Then they will definitely try to change their ways.

@Jobim

Easy for me to say that as a non-Japanese employee though.

Yes I agree.

But that is a Bonus Card we have as a foreigner in a japanese company.

A japanese Guy or Woman will never say, what you or me said, to a superiour.

Since many years in the same japanese company here, I always keep that Bonus Card and sometimes I play this Bonus Card out.

@Monty

I didn't quite go as far as that. But I've had to give superiors at two working places a good talking to due to abuse. Once in defence of myself and another time for a female coworker being treated fairly sadistically. Needless to say one ended up becoming extremely nice to me and the other started avoiding me completely. Once they realise you don't care about their position and small pond mentality they break pretty easy.

Easy for me to say that as a non-Japanese employee though.

How about this guy? I hope he was fired or worse.

I hope so too.

I had a similar problem with one of our managers in our oversea branch.

After I told him, if he dont stop treating me like that I will smash his head with my laptop, the situation completely changed.

Since then, always when I visit this oversea branch, he is very very nice to me.

So if they are responsible, they just pay and everything solved ?

Cost of life is very cheap then.
