M5 quake jolts Ibaraki, Tochigi, Saitama

Bit of a slow news day? A number 4 is a once a week occurance nowadays...

True enough; they've become pretty common. In northern Saitama, I think it was only a Shindo 3. It lasted long enough for me to gather my keys, wallet, phone, and whatnot and seriously consider leaving my study, though. The wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling metal bookshelves are secured, and didn't tumble even on 3/11, but there's no use tempting Fate.

I am very happy for SLOW NEWS DAYS, rather read about a tiny quake like this one than say, a huge horrible quake maybe 9 plus on the Richter scale has just destroyed all of Tokyo. You need to APPRECIATE what you have now, your life, health, roof on your head etc..because you just never know and in a blink of eye, hit up side the head by a huge earthquake, be swallowed up by the sea in a terrible tsunami etc...NMRK no big quakes to Japan!! NMRK!!

I was in the food court of my local AEON when this kicked off. Even though it's a pretty big building, there was some very noticeable shaking.

@wildwest. The closer the epicenter is to you, the less time you have. If the epicenter is below you. , it may come 10 sec or longer after you start feeling hit.

I wonder how safe "Shinkansens" are (or even their new Maglev replacements are) if the p-wave detectors are failing to provide that immediate advance warning...

Perhaps its this, that needs investigation since it suggests a Fraudulent offer of security, just as does those "Earthquake-proof" building assurances we read of...

IPhone quake alert went off just once, never felt any shaking in Yokohama. I was surprised to see the alarm went off AFTER the quake! Useless application indeed!

Serrano, I don't know how you can "stock up on bread and milk".

The milk will go sour and the bread will get mould which means you'll have to keep restocking it every week or so.

Along with water, try crisps, biscuits and chocolate. Tinned fruit is also a good idea and get the cans which don't need a can opener.

Get a can opener! The 100 yen shops have them, they work great!

@Farmboy, thanks! I just hope and pray we never have anything horrible like up in Fukushima, happen here in the Tokyo area. We must always be prepared or anything, right??
