An earthquake struck the Kanto area at 1:36 a.m. on Tuesday. The Japan Meteorological Center said the epicenter was at a depth of 80 kilometers in northwest Chiba where it registered 5.2. It measured 4 in Tokyo and parts of Kanagawa Prefecture.

Yes, this one sent my good lady scuttling around the house.
"Wake up! It's an earthquake!"
"I'm aware. Shall I command it to stop?"
japan123
how did police know there were no injuries when this information was posted 15 minutes after the earthquake? was there time to wait for reports of injuries?
NetNinja
@japan123 Perhaps the reporters have an office located inside the police station. Or the other way around.

A precursor maybe?

@Ivan, LOL! I love that, huh? What do they want us to do? Not like a thief or cockroach or something, right?

BTW this is a great site in English that shows where and how big each quake was each day: http://www.japanquakemap.com/
The first day for this site is 3/11, the BIG one. You see there were tons of quakes that day, so I do not think this morning was a precureser if that can be read as a pattern. Try the site, it kicks

The information was posted more than six hours after the quake.

In Tokyo, the magnitude was 4.

As usual, we are having a shake and we fear how bad is it going to get and whats next.
Disillusioned
Yep! Was on my way out the door in my undies. Had to change them after it was finished. ;P
gurudaimon
so a 7.2 is getting closer

@Blair Heron: The article doesn't flit between the Japanese measurement scale 震度 and the moment magnitude scale. It stays constant. The earthquake was measured as a 5.2 at it's epicentre and was recorded as a 4 i n Tokyo etcetera. Just as the article reads.
Blair Herron
@YongYong, thanks.
The article has been revised. It said "Magnitude 4 in Tokyo" before.
tokyokawasaki
It was a shindo level 3 in most areas of Tokyo
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/20120529014121391-290136.html
Shindo 4 in the following areas:
Tokyo Taito-ku Senzoku Tokyo Sumida-ku Higashi-mukojima Tokyo Koto-ku Shiohama Tokyo Shibuya-ku Hommachi

Definitely didn't have a good night's rest after that one. This link is almost identical to Blair Herron's link, only with sound. Scared the daylights out of me at around the 2 min. mark. Turn up the volume for maximum effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QGH08OyQXg4&noredirect=1
Elbuda Mexicano
My crap YureKuru did not go off at all! And my house is almost new, but I still felt as if my house was trying to dance salsa!! Thank the gods it was the big one at a stupid time of the late night?? Too early in the morning??
HansNFranz
@Elbuda Mexicano - why don't you simply delete that crappy Yurekita app and use the built-in warning function? It's much more reliable. That being said, being warned a few seconds before an earthquake isn't really that useful anyway.
StJapan
hmm I didnt think it was that big.. guess Im used to them..
TigersTokyoDome
It was officially 62 km deep and a 5.3 (Richter).
Shindo or Richter? There is a huge difference between the two. A Shindo 4 could injure and kill people. I imagine you meant Shindo.
Isthiezak
I got rid of YureKuru because the warnings always came after the quake was over, so I got a better one. Usually very quick and accurate, but it didn't go off at all this morning.
A quake that tricks early warning systems? They're evolving?!
Nessie
Right: Richter magnitude, or Shindo intensity. Probably Shindo intensity.
Thunderbird2
The epicentre seems to be quite close to where my ex lives... emailed her earlier, hope she's okay.
SpanishEyez37
My YureKuru did not go off either. The place was shaking hard and it was silent. I thought my settings were wrong.
