M4.9 quake hits eastern Japan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 hit parts of eastern Japan on Monday afternoon. However, there were no reports of injury or damage to any buildings.

There was no tsunami alert following the quake which struck at 1:23 p.m., the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake measured a 4 in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture and in the southern area of Tochigi Prefecture, and northern Saitama Prefecture, Fuji TV reported. In many of Tokyo’s 23 wards, it measured a 3.

The quake struck at a depth of 50 kilometers in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, the meteorological agency said.

Quite a nasty jolt here in southern Ibaraki. Given how sudden it was, I thought that it would be a shallow earthquake, so I was surprised when I saw how deep it was.
