M5.1 quake strikes off Fukushima coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture on Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, adding there was no danger of a tsunami.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 12:30 p.m., was 50 kilometers deep in the sea off the Fukushima coastline. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said there were no abnormalities at the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The quake registered a 4 in Fukushima Prefecture and a 3 in Miyagi Prefecture.

Tohoku Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said there were no abnormalities at the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

If that's not an oxymoron, I don't know what is!

Lots of quakes feels like. plus volcanic activity at Hakone...... getting my hard hat and emergency kit ready.

@Kaer, they should ALWAYS be ready. Grab bag, route, direction and plan too. All in place. Always be able to drop and leave in a country that is prone to natural catastrophes.

@Panbellend, when a number in a report such as this isn't quantified by 'magnitude' hey, it means, by its absence, that the number refers to... shindo. It ain't rocket science!

@YongYang - VERY bad assumption. Many people mix up units. Many people don't understand the difference between shindo and Mw.

What is with all the thumbs down on my comment?

The quake was not a magnitude 4, it was a shindo 4. You can't just say "it's a 4" with no units.

Quake registered a SHINDO 4 and a shindo 3. Need to be clear about such things.
