M5.5 quake jolts Kanto region; no tsunami warning issued

Happened exactly 1 week before I arrive in Tokyo.

One of the things I don't miss is the occasional shaking. Don't really get many up in Hokkaido, unlike the main island.

They have been little stronger as of late, let's hope it's not a precursor to the big one that was predicted to happen within 4 years of the last.

First jolt was enough to wake me up and seemed to rock and roll a long time. Hope all are well, No sleeping afterwards as many car alarms activated.

It got my overhead lamp swinging pretty good this morning.

These earthquakes don't usually wake me up. The car alarms, people chatting and calling to each other do.

Earthquakes of this size don't bother me. The loud alarm from the elementary school next door most certainly does. Considering it seems to serve no purpose except to create an adrenaline rush, I could do without it.

Folks, this was just a TINY tremor!! Maybe it is an omen for worse to come??

If you check out the Japan Meteorological Agency website on a daily basis for earthquake info 5.5 is on the upper end but not outside the normal range. I'm not trying to downplay it, just saying it's not such a big deal.

Woke me up this morning. Usually I sleep through them, but this lasted long enough to get me out of sleep mode. Nice alarm clock!

Where in my post did I say that Hokkaido doesn't get earthquakes? I said that I'm glad we don't get as many as Honshu appears to be getting.

People seriously need to read posts better...

What a rude awakening for an otherwise "peaceful" Sunday morning ! For once when I could have slept well on my new mattress ! (Have to get up early enough during the week...)

Inferring you don't get them in Hokkaido, or many, but Hokkaido does. JUST like the main island. Since 1900, three great earthquakes occurred off Japan and three north of Hokkaido. They are the M8.4 1933 Sanriku-oki earthquake, the M8.3 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, the M9.0 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the M8.4 1958 Etorofu earthquake, the M8.5 1963 Kuril earthquake, and the M8.3 1994 Shikotan earthquake. What do you know the same number! You need to seriously know what it is you post to carry the crowd.

I've got 2 dozen liters of water, a bunch of canned food, a can opener, plenty of toilet paper/tissue paper, and extra batteries for my 3 flashlights.

How will you keep war/dry, heat the food, etc. Toilet paper is good but what about the human waste?

Need to plan better also add some small personal items. Don't want to go into details but your kit misses about 80% of a decent kit.

Wow its amazing how eastern Japan and Tokyo usually get a shaking and here in Kansai regular quakes that are felt are scarce.

Let us all pray this does not occur when they are in the process of removing the fuel rods from the number 4 reactor in a couple of weeks. Any above average shake whilst craning them out could make any water leaks over the past few months look silly. Soil liquefaction either directly under the crane itself or elsewhere near the number four reactor building could also spell big trouble. The building of number four reactor is also structurally unsound and experts both in Japan and worldwide agree that it is unable to withstand another large quake and tsunami event. I do not believe in scaremongering but these are the facts and there are many other issues at the plant. Got my passport and gear at the ready!

This is the last time I'm going to say this. I DIDN'T SAY THAT HOKKAIDO DOESN'T GET EARTHQUAKES. I SAID THAT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN GETTING THEM AS MUCH AS HONSHU!!!!

Now do I have to make that any clearer to you? Or has JT been posting articles about Hokkaido getting the occasional M4-6 quake recently that I've somehow missed?

I mean christ I posted about the fact that I don't miss the occasional shake that Honshu has been experiencing since 3/11 but for whatever reason you have it in your mindset that I appear to think that Hokkaido doesn't get any. I know Hokkaido has had bad earthquakes in the past, I know that it will happen again in the future. But I was talking about these moderate quakes. Can you understand that?

As long as we all know that any region Japan is not less or more suceptible to earthquakes than any other and that it's a fallacy to believe otherwise then I am happy. Be prepared where ever you are in Japan. Earthquakes happen across the entire region, can't afford to be naive thinking any region is sfaer than others.

I was awake and working at my PC, but didn't notice the quake. That's odd, because I'm usually pretty sensitive to them. I guess maybe a big truck coincidentally passed nearby or something, and I attributed the vibration to that.

I'd hate to think that I've grown so accustomed to them that I failed to notice what seems to have been at least as noticeable a quake as the other recent ones, which I did indeed notice.

@Haruka: Hokkaido: 4 earthquakes in the past month. 25 earthquakes in the past year. The largest earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan this month: 5.0 in Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan. So, whatever it is you're stats are telling you, they're wrong and deceiving you into thinking Hokkaido is somehow 'safer' than Honshu fron earthquakes. Maybe you follow Mr Abe's mantra, 'It's all under control'? But it's not.

The really big one is coming. Instead of preparing for war the Abe Government best use its money to prepare for emergencies and reconstruction after the big one hits.
