A lot of people believe a lot of things.

Basing an earthquake-prediction system on historical sunspot activity is just irresponsible. The same guy predicted the Tokai quake for July 2012. It didn't happen. They drop lots of dates and just hope that one fits. Even if earthquakes are slightly influenced by eclipses or sunspots, there so many other factors that affect their production. What happens if an undersea mountain on the edge of a subduction zone delays a quake by 10, 50 or 150 years?

Japan has one of the most complex tectonic systems in the world. It is almost impossible to predict quakes here with any accuracy, especially if you concentrate the prediction on a single factor.

Wait while staying safe? I am ready for the big one at any given moment! Are you?

Yes! Well ... as ready as It is possible to be. Earthquake kit updated etc.

Although beware your cup a soup, disillusioned. I recently went through my (2 years ago) earthquake kit, and found that all my cup-soups in there had gone out of date :O

I don't know if you all believe it or not, but there is a group of people who also believe a link between Eclipses and earthquakes. Interestingly enough, we have a solar eclipse coming up in the beginning of May. Nothing scientifically proven, however its an interesting link to watch.

I don't own a tinfoil hat but some nutters have been saying that this is being caused by the U.S. and their HAARP programme. Some say it's caused by the fine tuning of HAARP to attack NK (I know, I know, I fell out of my chair laughing too). Others say it's the U.S. punishing Japan for not playing fair with their currency (I know, again I fell out of my chair while doing a double face palm). Could it just be that we have so much information available at our fingertips that we are beyond hypersensitive to any news of earthquakes? Imagine we didn't have the 'net, so smart phones wouldn't really be all that smart. So say it's the early 90's, how would we even really know what's going on elsewhere if it didn't make the 6 o'clock news or War on Earth battle channel, Clueless Crap Network?

There is no scientifically verifiable evidence that sunspots cause earthquakes.

There is a possibility that sun-spots are responsible for the latest activity.

Also here you can find a discussion about the latest activity

Wow. Thinking of all of you over there. Not missing the shaky shaky thing at all since I left :( !

bigfujiyama - oh really? And how do you know that? Im going to place money on the fact that, as the big clever scientists at the Japanese Meteorological Agency can still >not predict huge earthquakes within a couple of minutes of them, that either can you. And the fact they can also not >rule out it all being related to each other, that either can you.

Well you would lose your money. I have a degree in geology, specifically plate tectonics. Nobody can predict earthquakes, but with a little knowledge you can tell the difference. If you knew anything about quakes, you would know it was a deep-focus quake. Deep quakes occur on a different mechanism from shallow focus ones, although scientists don't know the exact reason it is thought that they occur when minerals in part of a subducting slab go through a change. They don't cause after shocks and they don't cause tsunamis. They are felt over a wide area because of the depth. There was a 7.0 deep quake down there on New Years day 2012. Again there were no aftershocks, but it was felt over a wide area. The Miyake-jima quakes are related to magma movement at an undersea volcano close to Miyake. That movement could lead to an eruption and the magma movement could be an after effect from the 2011 quake. However, the 6.7 quake today was completely different.

Big quakes can happen at any time in Japan. The only thing you can do is prepare, but a little understanding of how they work goes a long way.

I think until the underground stabilizes, we should may be stop suggestions to restart nuke plants.....

Definitely time to re-stock all the emergency supplies, water, batteries etc, people. These quakes have started occurring a lot more frequently lately Ive noticed, and whilst no scientist can predict them accurately - we may as well assume another big one is coming soon.

Yeah, there has been a lot of activity on the fault in the last week or so. The Miyake island has been shaking like crazy and threatening to erupt and quite a few regional quakes throughout kanto as well. It's worrying that, one group of scientists will state that the frequent small quakes are a good and they relieve pressure. Then, you have another group of scientists stating that the frequent small quakes are a lead up to a larger quake. Who do you believe? Obviously, they don't bloody well know or they would have predicted the 3/11 quake, which they didn't! Only believe yourself! Keep your emergency kits updated and hope you are close enough to home to access it 'when' the next major quake comes. I carry a backpack to work, which has a torch, radio, water and cup'o'soup in it always! Without trying to be a scare monger, the big is coming! There is no doubt! It might not be for a hundred years or it might be tomorrow! All scientists agree it is coming, but nobody knows when!

Kimuzukashiii - I suspect that you know as much as they rest of us do, and should probably just do as we are all doing and wait for further news and updates, while staying safe.

Not related to any other recent activity.

And the fact they can also not rule out it all being related to each other, that either can you.

While you might suspect that they are not related, with earthquakes a lot of it is done in hindsight. Its easy to look at quakes as individual quakes, but sometimes they can be foreshocks to a mega quake. Which of course, is apparent, after the mega quake has happened. Its a wait and see thing.

Of course, if you are posting from down there alongside the tectonic plates, I will promptly eat my hat. However I suspect that you know as much as they rest of us do, and should probably just do as we are all doing and wait for further news and updates, while staying safe.

6.7 was a deep quake. 450km down.

Not related to any other recent activity.

Like I said on a previous thread, the amount of earthquake activity of late, and I mean major quakes, is kind of scary. Take care, people.
