Even Okinawa is having more than its fair share of earthquakes in recent months. Tsunami's scare me the most, no place to go in Okinawa.

what was the shindo? magnitude only tells strength. shindo is probably a more useful assessment imo.

The way Japan's going I think a few more big quakes will be felt a lot sooner than the 30 years estimated. Not that I am a scientist or anything. It just seems like someone has turned on an 'earthquake switch' and here we all are. Keep safe everyone!

Blair, please let me know. Everything what's going in Japan in the past couple of days are blowing my mind. Earthquakes are happening everywhere, everyday. You guys are very strong to put up with these monsters.

According to Asahi Shimbun this morning, 9M class earthquake would occur 30% possibility within 30 years along the coast of Minamisanriku through Bousou of Chiba.

My son and his family live in Hokkaido. I am praying for them and all of Japan.

As for the big one hitting Tokyo, I think most of the bigger buildings will have no major damage. The bigger problem might be all the people, as seen on a smaller scale on 3/11!.

Please stop beating that dead horse. On March 11, the nuclear plant survived the earthquake just fine. In case you forgot, what it was not prepared for was a 20 m wall of water. And even that would still have been OK, if the connection to the outside power grid had survived.

I think it should be possible to discuss this without rethorical distortions.

@Culturally aware enough to pick that shrine HOW 'edgy': No. You'll be able to see for yourself that if an earthquake of that magnitude (Not sure which scale you are using? Are you?) occurs within the Tokyo / Yokohama Metropolitan area that it will suffer less damage than any other comparable mega-city.

There's a lot of settling going to continue for a long time yet as stresses built up by the March 11th mega-quake release. Japan is well built for earthquakes and is a world leader in the technology; modern buildings here survive the fierce movement experienced along a subduction zone when it slips. It is the mega-tsunami and the damage done by the mega-quakes to infrastructure, notably nuclear power plants, that is of major concern. No major concrete structure completely failed in the March 11th quake, that is testament to the standard of engineering here, but when pipes and connections and walls and electricity go down at a nuclear power plant, who's built in redundancy measures are totally inadequate, well... then you have a problem. Rokkasho was 2 on the Japanese scale and as YongYang says that facility is scary for everyone.

That was a long shake, made me feel dizzy for quite some time. Thanks God no damage. I am worried about big quakes happening in the freezing cold and in tons of snow soon. You can't even escape by car anymore. Let's pray for the best.
