They didn't know on 3/11,but now they'd know?

What makes you think they 'didn't know' on 3/11? As soon as the shaking stopped and I was able to climb out from under the dining table, I switched on the telly and every channel was showing a map of Japan with red flashing tsunami warnings all down the east coast.

Immediately after the quake and before the tsunami struck, many people seem to have assumed they had more time than they in fact had, and/or that the tsunami would be no larger than ones they had experienced in the past. The people sending out the alarms never said there was no danger of a tsunami.

They announced that there would be a tsunami on 3/11, right away.

This quake was detected 14 minutes later by a seismometer in the bottom of my garden at 4 am local time ( 3 am GMT). The garden in question is 10,000 km away in England. it's a small world.

most people at work had a small panic because of the alarm lol. imagine 30-40 phones all going off at the same time. but yeah, we received the warning 10-15 secs before we actually felt the shake. impressive.

Sjeesh, that earthquake alarm is a true wake-up call when you're concentrated at work. This was a pretty long shake btw.

I don't find earthquakes funny.... but what I DO find funny is how everyone races to social media to post "Earthquake!!!" Really? I had no idea there was an earthquake...except for the screaming alarm and my room shaking. The race to be the first to proclaim the obvious baffles me.

with a depth of just ten km down, that's gonna hurt. glad no one died. hopefully the big one predicted for Tokyo wont happen until all of us here are long gone. 100 years from now?

You can hope all you like but a safer bet would be to get the hell out of there while you're still able to.

I take their so-called no tsunami alert with a generous serving of doubt. They didn't know on 3/11,but now they'd know?

As others have said, the tsunami was announced right away on 3/11. They were announcing a 10m tsunami, and even though I understood Japanese, I thought I must not understand how tsunamis work, because I didn't think there could be such a thing as a 10m tsunami.

That warming came nice and early! I had time to grab my baby, check the gas conro was off then crouch in a doorway with my baby before it hit. Very impressed!!
