Holy crap, this one was pretty strong. The epicenter is actually 40 miles from Sendai, 60 miles for us since we are in the southwest area of Sendai. Got jolted awake bigtime. I was in my undies when my fiancé said for me to put on my clothes. The tv newscast showed the footage and damn. It was pretty strong. The earthquake website reports this as moderate to strong I'm my area.

I will be honest, I was frightened. Couldn't sleep for an hour.

What's with these big ones recently? Another 8+ on the way or something?

Woke me up!

Could be. Earthquake prediction isn't much of a science, though.

I actually didn't feel it in the Tokyo area though it was a shindo 2. I'm usually pretty sensitive to these and will wake up with a 2 but not at all today.

@delitachan:

You can actually hear them before they start the rocking if yu are sitting silently and reading.

You will be ok and get used to them.

Really? I'm in Koutou-ku and I definitely woke up from it.

Are there actually people still within 3 km of the northeast coast of Japan?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Yes the east coast has had lots of aftershocks but they've been m5s and less. This month alone, two m6s and an m7. The news cast showed footage of my area. It was really shaking a lot!

Yeah, I've noticed that the apt makes like a creak noise and then it shakes.

My fiancés eyes opened but he didn't even bother to sit up or anything. Lol. He just murmured, "yeah make sure you have your clothes on." after it was over, he just laughed and said "welcome to Sendai"

It woke me up in Kanagawa. I live on the 8th floor so even a 2-pointer gets my place swaying.

It woke us up in Kodaira-shi west of Tokyo. Enough to rattle things on shelves and creak the doors.

Seems like there has been an uptick in the larger ones last few days. And Mie prefecture had one yesterday too. Entirely unrelated quake.

We slept through this one.

Radio and iPhone app going off multiple times. Decided to get dressed just in case. Utility lines waving in the still early dawn. Sumida-ku...rocked just a little. My little tea cups enjoyed their extra vigorous swaying.

@legs: So right your are. I was sleeping with my ear on the tatami once and heard a deep rumble before any shaking started. It's because the "P" (pulse) waves travel faster than the "S" (shear) waves. So keep your ears to the ground people!

It is incredible how a magnitude 6 earthquake gets so little attention these days.

Woke me up. My wife slept right through it.

Supposedly we're now gonna get rolling blackouts from 1:30-3:30pm here in Sendai Taihaku ward. I guess the power plant was further damaged in that 6.2

this is the last thing they need to feel or go through, theres still many things to get done from March earthquake. i wish the quakes would STOP or just be small tremers like 2. something.

They do make a lot of noise before hitting. If you have pets you can really witness nature at its best.

Another rude awakening here in south Iwate. Things were quiet for about 3 days until Saturday afternoon. Everyone I know has 'jisshin yoi' motion sickness, including me. Yuck.

I keep wondering if it will ever end. It's a horrible thing to hear of this happening over and over, but to live through it over and over...I hold the Japanese people in the highest regard for what they have managed to endure. My prayers are with you, as it is all I can do at this time.

Slept right through it, but i am generally comatose anyway in between the kid-wake-ups which happened about 3 times last night but obviously not at that time!

We are in Koto-city too, so I am surprised if it was only a shindo 2 here as my friend said today it was "really bad". Then again, she only arrived a couple of months or so ago and wasnt here for the big one, so maybe her perspective is different to the rest of us?!

shinhiyata - SO true! I find myself swaying all the time now, even when nothing is happening! Weird, isnt it?

Will Tokyo be destined to be the next Atlantis ????

The category between 6 and 7 in magnitude falls between 4 and 5 on a Richter scale. It brings constant tremors, but will not do serious damage to the buildings and housing complexes in general. We don't usually get the news report on moderate earthquakes from international media such as the AP or Reuter, unless they cause substantial damages, civilian casualties or the issue of tsunami warning. But, the catastrophic injuries brought out by 3/11 earthquake have raised an international awareness of natural disaster and gravitated people's attention to the place where tremors occur rampantly since then.

The category between 6 and 7 in magnitude falls between 4 and 5 on a Richter scale.

This is completely and totally false. The shindo scale represents a direct measurement of shaking, Richter measures the energy released in a quake. A shindo 6-7 quake is very destructive, but it could be between a 5.0 on the Richter scale or so (if shallow - see the recent Nagano quake) or however high the quake can go (9, 9.5, etc). A shindo 7 quake is quite literally the top of the scale.

Japan gets tons of 4-5 Richter quakes. There was just a 5.7 this evening; shindo 3 at the maximum. The shindo magnitude of the quake is way more important to most people than the Richter scale magnitude.

Japan has always had huge earthquakes and more will no doubt come. Be prepared as much as you can. It's a mistake to think that things will settle down in a year. Nobody knows.
