Cheney? Who's next to receive Nippon's warmest accolades? Pol Pot? Josef Stalin? Bete netanyahoo? What MONSTER will next OFFICIALLY be recognized as a desirable rôle model for Japanese youth? And cohen also? Perhaps donald trump as well? And, in this same vein, when does Tōjō Hideki finally appear on the ¥10000 bill? Or even Cheney himself given that he is a 'hero' of Japan worthy of being held up to young Nihonjin as a model Human? As an American, I PROTEST Japan giving awards to America's unindicted mass murderers and war criminals. A true friend of Nihon asks that, PLEASE, rescind this travesty.

"Cheney, 77, and Cohen, 78, joined other former senior U.S. officials who have been decorated in Japan for their roles in enhancing the security alliance between the two countries."
A real head-scratcher there regarding Cheney. How did he enhance the security alliance between the U.S. and Japan? As U.S. vice president in 2003, Cheney strongly supported the invasion of Iraq by U.S. armed forces and the overthrowing of Saddam Hussein's government. The chaos that ensued in Iraq afterwards destroyed what little credibility America had left and convinced North Korea's leaders that they needed to start developing nuclear weapons faster to prevent an invasion of their country ordered by Bush & Cheney.
So yes, if inadvertently turning North Korea into a bigger threat than before "enhanced" the security alliance between the U.S. and Japan then I guess Cheney deserves to receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

they are cut from the same cloth... Nippon Kaigi practically run Japan from behind the scenes so that says it all really..

The sentiment seems to be nearly unanimous here, but our voices are not heard.
Why is that?

No surprise here - they awared one to Rumsfeld three years ago.

The love affair between the neocons and Nippon Kaigi is seemingly endless. Shinzo received an award and a slap up lunch from the Hudson Institute a few years back and reciprocates with Japanese gongs for all the Bush2 era war criminals.

Great way to make an honour worthless and reviled

Really excellent choices. Dr Mohammed is a strongman of Asia and has always been a Japanese-style ruler, learning from Japan and had so much success for decades.
Well given his age, that strongman of Asia will retire and his chosen successor Anwar Ibrahim will take over, now during his last visit to Japan, Mr Ibrahim was stopped and turned back by immigration at Narita, this award is probably to soften the flashback.

Perhaps that was the price to pay to be exempt from the Iran oil sanctions.

I always thought the Japanese decoration was controlled by USA.

If that's true then Gen. Lemay deserves NO AWARD. Only a fool would be enough to believe you can win a nuclear war. 'Pre-emptive' my butt! Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev knew better than that, does anybody remember? They resolved the Cold War peacefully and now we this obnoxious obsessive orangutan on the loose destroying America and he's on a Russian leash.
And for Dick Cheney, he's a war criminal. He makes money from the illegal Iraq War and its subsequent conflicts, he gleefully endorses torture - a human rights violation in itself, he shot his hunting partner in the face and got away with it, and he should be on trial in the Hague against humanity.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Next thing you know, il Douche Trump will get an award. This is a sham and a disgrace - a slap in the face against the recipients who really deserve the honor.

Gen. LeMay also oversaw the firebombing of North Korean cities, and was an advocate for the use of nuclear weapons; in the Korean War, against China, and later during the Cuban missile crisis. He was not deterred by the prospect of a nuclear war with the USSR, believing that the USA would be better able to survive such a war than the other side. He advocated for a pre-emptive nuclear war with China, to prevent them from ever becoming a military threat to the US. He ran on the 1968 ticket with George Wallace, as his vice-presidential running mate.
Ganbare Japan!
Really excellent choices. Dr Mohammed is a strongman of Asia and has always been a Japanese-style ruler, learning from Japan and had so much success for decades. Malaysia is now a First world economy, a strong democracy . And Dick Cheney has also always been a great friend to Japan.

Well, about Cheney, remember that an award was given to Curtis Lemay for building up the Japanese air force. He is the one who advocated the "everyone is the enemy" ideology, where every living man, woman, child, and little crawling baby is a legitimate object of death in war. So during the war, he firebombed all Japanese cities killing mostly women, children, old people, and babies because the men were off at war. But he got an award.

Glad I'm not the only one repulsed by this choice, perhaps it's for shooting his friend in the face and getting away with it, something this government does figuratively to its own population with impurity.
yokohamarides
This makes me sick. Cheney should be arrested and sent to The Hague for crimes against humanity.

Cheney...for what?war crimes?genocide?
Oh wait it's from Japan govt.no wonder there.
