It may sound like a scene from a cheap horror movie, but it’s not.
Recently, Shizuoka prefectural local authorities have been alarmed by the sudden appearance of several painted route guides on Mt. Fuji’s seventh station, leading climbers toward a wrong, highly-dangerous route, Sankei Shimbun reported.
The signs were spotted on rocks and at other points near the Miharukan lodge along the regular climbing route in late June, representatives from Shizuoka Prefecture’s Oyama City said. The arrows on the signs were approximately 30 centimeters long and painted in white, stretching to a total of 300 meters along the route.
Though there have been no injuries reported as a result of the signs, the city said that several climbers had taken the wrong route, which leads to a rocky and slippery area.
“Not only can this lead to a terrible accident, but it’s a highly malicious act from the point of view of nature preservation as well,” a city representative said.
Local authorities have placed no-trespassing tape around the signs and will be removing the paint shortly, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Hey, no problem, if they can pick up a signal they can use the GPS in their smart phones to find the summit.

Maybe to someone with no idea what horror movies are like.
To the rest of us it sounds more like some kids pranking people. Let's be honest, with the vast numbers of people who visit Fuji every year, it's to be expected that some of them would misbehave.
