Focus on not killing off currently living species. Resurrecting an extinct one has little more than entertainment value.

So many comments about saving endangered species instead of resurrecting extinct ones without realizing that one can be solved by the other...

Ummm, if a Mammoth was actually brought back to life NOW, it would be in the start of global warming.

Not exactly the ice ages.

You guys realize Jurassic Park, while a great movie, is a fictitious story, right?

One thing they never addressed (I think) is how the dinosaurs got so durn big! How long was that island supposed to have been around? And nobody talked about making these dinosaurs?

I really want to see the mammoth revived.

Why? The environment in which it thrived is long gone.

Allowing species to become extinct just because the human race can't get our heads around proper management of the environment and are thus directly responsible for the destruction of habitat is one thing: deliberately producing a living being just for the sake of curiosity, or 'because we can', is quite another.

Any such 'resurrected' mammoth/dinosaur would be one very miserable creature.

We have just reanimated cells from a long-extinct species, opening up news ways to reverse extinction and you ask why it is news...

That going to be one hell of a wire cage and wheel to play in if it is born!

I really want to see the mammoth revived. It is likely that we will but it will take generations and will be an elephant /mammoth hybrid.

So um have they not watched jurassic park? 

I think that most scientists are capable of distinguishing science fact from science fiction.

When i see comments on here, i understand why the world money does not end up in science... and also, i imagine the same comments on "scientist discovers electricity can make frog legs move" in 1780...

"this frog is long dead, we shouldn't play god and make it move"

"why would you want to make a dead frog move?"

"did you see jurassic park ?.. okay maybe this one wasn't a likely comment in 1780...

AI is a bit of a bogeyman these days. I've created AI, and I assure you it was not able to do much more than make a few decisions on how data should be treated.

Why would they want to recreate a mammoth? Its long dead.. let it be

So um have they not watched jurassic park? Because I see dinosaurs happening next. Kudos to the advancment however they are extinct for a reason. Their bodies will not adapt well with our current environment. Bad idea.

This is cool I guess but we have all seen Jurassic Park, we know what can happen from messing around with this type of thing, humanity really needs to be careful with this

None, however, produced the actual cell division needed for a mammoth rebirth...

The project by an international team took cell nuclei from a well-preserved mammoth discovered in 2011 in Siberian permafrost and placed them into several dozen mouse egg cells.

I, for one, welcome our new mammouse overlords.

Just because they can doesn't mean they should.

Meanwhile, the number of endangered species in the world today grows.

Hopefully these scientists can find a 21st century application from their research!
