Man broadcasts own suicide live on video streaming site

A 24-year-old man from Sendai hanged himself in his apartment on Tuesday at around 5:30 a.m. while broadcasting the incident live to viewers on the Internet. Police were alerted to the suicide by viewers of the web page Ustream. By 8 a.m. a policeman in Miyagi prefecture had begun to follow the online trail that had led to the man's death.

It is believed the man gave advance warning of his forthcoming suicide on several web pages leading up to the event. On Nov 4, he is believed to have posted messages on the popular forum site 2 Channel, stating "I'm going to commit suicide." He allegedly gave the name of his employer, a banking institution, some details about problems he'd had at work and wrote that he was currently suspended from his duties.

Following this, messages appeared on Ustream on Nov 7 that investigators believe were written by the same man. He shared some of his thoughts on life and again gave advance notice of his plan to commit suicide. On Nov 8 at around 4 a.m., his feed was temporarily offline causing rampant speculation online as whether the man was staging an elaborate hoax. The feed went back online on Nov 9 at around midnight.

Investigators believe at around 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, the man tried to hang himself on his balcony using what appeared to be knotted sheets but the joist buckled under his weight, causing him to suspend the attempt. The video then showed the man finding a new spot on his balcony and repeated the attempt at around 5:30 a.m. at which point viewers could make out that he had stopped moving.

It was reported that the sky behind the man in the video brightened as the dawn broke in real time, causing many doubters to believe that they were indeed watching a real live feed. Heated arguments began to spring up on Ustream and 2 Channel between people disagreeing over the authenticity of what they were witnessing.

According to investigators, as the man's professional position became public knowledge, a large number of messages were posted by agitators telling the man his life was over, expressing hatred or encouraging him to follow through with his plan.

According to police, viewers began to report the man's suicide after 6 a.m. The man lived alone and police say that thus far, a will has not been found. It has also been reported that the man posted a message directed to the police at around 1:40 a.m. to inform them of his intentions.

"He allegedly gave the name of his employer, a banking institution, some details about problems he’d had at work and wrote that he was currently suspended from his duties."

In other words, Channel2 and any else who read about his notices could have alerted someone at any time before the man actually carried out the act, but the kind souls (sarcasm) decided to wait until he was dead to do anything. It makes me sick whenever I hear after-the-fact accounts of 'worry' and what not by viewers/neighbours. It's always (to the media), "I heard the boy screaming all the time and his parents hitting him... I was so worried!" or, "The poor little girl always looked so thin, had bruises, and was crying, and her father and mother always left her alone" after a child or someone dies. My reaction is always the same, "So what did you do about it?"

Selfish moron. He was asking for the abuse to justify his suicide. Then, it's not his fault, but societies ... maaaaaaan! Agreed watching this idiot is sickening, and the act of advertising your plans to off yourself? He knew exactly what he was doing.

There should be a law gainst people encourging someone to commit suicide.Too many sickos these days who enjoy other suffering and in this case ultimate death.

Sad and sick that someone would do this. Sad and sick that some people watched.

I wonder when it will be available on YouTube.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How many views did his video get?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And you mean the "Cyber Angels" and not the "Guardian Angels". Sheeez.

Shinjukuboy.

Ever heard of "Perverted Justice" and "How to catch a predator".

Most private companies and agencies tend to beat law-enforcement. Wanna know why?

Perhaps he has parents and siblings trulymadlyfukai. Everyone is missed by someone.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I doubt anyone will miss him.

yup tamanegi, I agree. This is really just the next "thing" in suicides. It will be all the rave for a few moments and then it will wear itself out until another arse offs him/herself in an "Innovative" way.

Not to be too cold, but I liked the dude that tied a rope to a tree, put it through the hatchback window and then laced up his neck. One stomp on the gas peddle and it was all over.

Anonymity breeds this terrifying lack of humanity.

Wanting to kill yourself because you are depressed I understand but wanting to broadcast it is just weird. The Darwin instinct is in parallel with the talento instinct.

you'd think by now he police would be monitoring 2channel for suicide/murder threats...

Just another sad story. RIP.

Agree 2channel can be bad. But there are also some good boards there.

Recall a study where the police force staged rapes, muggings on the subway. Sickening was that most passengers cheered and encouraged the ongoings. (Not saying where it was held).

@Zenny11 - Sadly, 2Channel is a place full of sick people who LIKE this kind of stuff. Remember a few years ago that guy who took a train to Fukui, bought knives, came back to Tokyo, rented a van, rammed people in (Akihabara?), then jumped out and killed more with his knives? He broadcast his entire trip on BBS on 2Channel, and NOBODY bothered to contact or alert the police.

That is 2Channel, and YES it is VERY VERY sad that they just sat there and watched him die.

Look out for copy cats in the coming days.

Shinohara.

I don't get that point myself, unless it is a cry for help and asking for people to make him stop.

Ditto for wrist slashing, cut across = you want help. Cut the Arterie/Vein lengthwise and you are serious as you die way faster.

So to me it is sad as I see it as the last cry for help and people sit there and cheer, etc.

Sounds like he didn't want to go out without getting his 5 minutes of fame (it used to be 15 minutes, but in the internet age, it is now 5).

I don't understand it. The man broadcasts himself for what reason? I really don't get the exhibitionist part of suicide here in Japan. Jumping in front of trains in crowded stations, now this?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't want to break any bubbles here, but this internet, live look I am killing myself thing is not only happening here in Japan. Youtube etc..have had cases of kids in the USA etc..who suicide in front of their webcams too. RIP poor young dude up in Miyagi.

Ok so its the internet thats screwed up not the people using it?

That is implied...

"Just weak people! It is a Japahetic society!"

I love the Japan-bashing in these comments on almost every story, usually from the same readers.

This incident, with it's taunters urging him to go through with the act, was hardly a Japanese innovation. In 2008 an American teen named Abraham Biggs killed himself on Justin.tv to the same sort of chorus of depraved cheerleaders. Google Abraham Biggs for all the details.

Sorry, to burst your Japan-hating bubble, Disillusioned.

The internet is not to blame here, obviously. It's the people using it. And for those of you calling this a Japanese thing, I guess you haven't heard of the other cases of people doing the same exact thing in the West? Complete with people WATCHING IT and not doing a darn thing?

I agree with Zenny11. This is a tragic story, in more ways than one.

His broadcast received many messages, with some web users encouraging him to kill himself quickly, while others urged him not to. Ustream stopped the broadcast after 6am on Tuesday, following reports from an increasing number of viewers, Yomiuri said.Japan has one of the world's highest suicide rates, accounting for more than 32,000 deaths last year, the 12th consecutive year to exceed 30,000 deaths.

This is Japanese Humanity at Work.

please Zenny11, Ossan and the other here who always find excuse or say this also happens in America. please stop, this is sick!!

I would say the internet is screwed up

This event has made international news although, there are no empathetic overtones in those articles, unlike this one. Only the facts: His broadcast received many messages, with some web users encouraging him to kill himself quickly, while others urged him not to.

I've said it before - Japan is like a cheap nashi pear: It looks alright on the outside, but the closer you get to the core the more rotten it gets!

Humans are humans.

No different from the people that would cheer gladiators in the Colloseum, etc.

Hey, it is fun and an attraction and no danger to me.

Plus too many people got densensitized due to movies, etc. Video/Chat on the PC is NO different from watching a flick or the TV news. Something not really related to us.

If they would broadcast sections of Iran war movies on the news people couldn't be able to tell it. Just things on the tube.

Humans are so sad.

It has also been reported that the man posted a message directed to the police at around 1:40 a.m. to inform them of his intentions.

And of course, they did absolutely nothing.

asahi_man

People were aware of what he was doing and sat there and watched him do it with out contacting the police or some other authority or atleast counselor or something????? I can't believe people could sit and watch this happen without doing anything. Japan society really is screwed!

I would say the internet is screwed up. For a lot of netizens, bullying and suicide are jokes until something actually happens.

Wow creepy.

So sad but not the 1st suicide broadcast vie the net.

Recall a case a few years ago a guy taking sleeping pills and chatting while he died. His video chat participants took some time to realise he had died.

only 24 years old. so sad...
