Man falls to death from 2nd floor of Omotesando Hills

A man in his 50s fell to his death from the second floor of Tokyo's Omotesando Hills shopping complex on Saturday, police said.

The incident occurred just after 12 noon. Fuji TV reported that police received a call saying that a man was lying on the floor in the basement of the popular shopping facility.

The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Surveillance camera footage showed the man climbing over the glass wall of an open stairwell on the second floor. He fell about 12 meters to the 2nd-floor basement.

Although the complex was crowded with shoppers at the time, the man did not hit anyone below, police said.

nfijapan - pretty obvious he was thinking suicide, not trying to get a better view of the mall.

Could've been a burglar that missed his footing. The 2nd floor seems a little low for a jumper.

a burglar in an open stairwell in a packed mall at 12 noon.

Of course. That had to be it.

I think the poster was just saying it could be anything. While the explanation makes it sound like suicide, I agree that jumping from the second floor doesn't seem like the potential for success is high, though if that was his intent he did indeed succeed.

In any case, glad that he did not land on anyone.

Did anybody actually read the article? It says he fell from 2nd floor down to the second floor basement. Also it states he fell 12 meters which is exactly the same 4 floor distance.

How do you know he didn't drop something and thought he could catch it in time? The fact is you do not know for a fact, and that is what the poster was saying. You can only infer, and while it is the most obvious inference, it is not yet established fact. I also think it was suicide -- but I don't KNOW for a fact it was. Neither do you.
