Man found with knife in chest outside Kawasaki apartment

A man believed to be around 30 years old was found with a knife in his chest just after 11 p.m. Sunday night. Police said it is likely the man committed suicide.

A security guard found the man lying on the ground outside the entrance to the apartment building in Kawasaki City, and called for an ambulance. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead about at about 12.30 a.m.

Police are treating the case as a suicide after finding an email in the man's cell phone alluding to suicide, and given that there no signs of a struggle at the scene.

From the title I thought he was hiding in a trunk or something.

who commits suicide by stabbing themselves with a knife?

Are you new to Japan and its history of seppuku? Although his method was not the proper way of using the knife in seppuku, it's the tool of choice.

Strangely enough, I found an old man with a knife sticking out of his chest near Kawasaki about this time last year. I called the ambulance but the J-cops arrived first. Can you imagine - a man with carving knife sticking out of his chest and a gaijin trying to explain the situation? I was prime suspect. Fortunately for me, the guy told the police it was self inflicted. I shudder to think what would have happened had he gotton a bit confused.

**who commits suicide by stabbing themselves with a knife?

My friends husband did.

I don't think the cops should be so quick to jump to conclusions. The fact that he was found outside an apartment is rather weird. Could have been a murder made to look like a suicide.

Are you new to Japan and its history of seppuku?

切腹 requires two people and is done on the belly.

Hmmm. If I were using a knife I'm pretty sure I'd do the stomach and up. Seppuku style. Surely this way is enough to make the police suspect murder and oh I don't know maybe the murderer writing the email... Brings a new meaning to fall on your sword.

This is sad.

an easy way to kill a man or to commit suicide is to stab him in the chest right in the heart no need for a struggle as it would kill you almost instantly

No, noirgaijin, im not new here and yes, familiar with seppuku. Stabbing yourself is not disembowelment. Either way, its screwy. Going by the cops reaction, all one needs to do to get away with murder is take the poor bugger's phone and write a suicide note.

切腹 requires two people and is done on the belly.

Not really, nobility used to people to decapitate the person before they grimaced in pain which was considered humiliating. Commoners or lower class folks did it alone and the throat or chest were the usual places to stab due to the quicker loss of blood from these areas.

At least he did not jump in front of a train.

I agree with Dolphingirl.

"A security guard found the man lying on the ground outside the entrance to the apartment building"

You'd think that most suicides would occur in privacy... not at the entrance to a building. "Dolphingirl"... is that an allusion to a superhero or something by the way? Sorry, just asking.

"Are you new to Japan and its history of seppuku?"

"切腹 requires two people and is done on the belly."

If I may be so bold as to add, "And no one does it anymore."

Japanese don't walk around in kimonos, topknots, or carry katanas anymore either, but shhh!! Don't tell anyone! It'll murder the tourist industry!

All this speculation. It clearly was an accident. He was clipping a lose cotton of the front of his nice white b/man's shirt and fell on the knife. Obviously!

Title should say: Man found with a stab to his chest with a knife. I thought the man was just carrying a knife. Poor guy!!!

That title is fine to me, although no mention that he died.

It could read 'Dying man, knife in chest, found outside apartment.'

Nobody kills themselves in seppuku. Look it up. You disembowel yourself, and someone else cuts your head off. This relieves the other person of responsibility, even though he was the one who killed you.

spudman, that would not be called seppuku. Any more than eating a hot dog would be called holy communion.

hoserfella, I was only commenting on your quote

who commits suicide by stabbing themselves with a knife?

The first step in seppuku is stabbing yourself, followed by disembowelment and a possible beheading.

beheading

It does not involve beheading. The head remains attached to the body by a flap of skin.

Anyway, The cops should take a closer look but you never know. Maybe they are releasing this note to make a suspect comfortable while they follow some leads.
