A 25-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving was hit by a train on a rail crossing in Shimozuma, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Police said the accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Monday. TV Asahi reported that there were no gates and no alarm at the crossing. The driver of the one-car train on the Kanto Tetsudo Joso line told police he noticed the car on the tracks about 20 meters away but he could not apply the brake in time.
The train hit the car and pushed it along for about 100 meters before it stopped. No one on the train was hurt, police said.

Sounds like he offed himself, or just really bad timing to have your call stall.

This must have gotten lost in translation. What was the train operator doing that he first noticed the car on the track when it was only about 60 feet away? I'm guessing the driver was in the act of crossing the tracks, but with no gate or warning lights, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
