Man, woman killed after their car hit by train in Hokkaido

A man and a woman were killed when their car was hit by an express train on a level crossing in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, on Saturday.

According to police, the incident occurred on a crossing on the JR Muroran line at around 10:30 a.m. Fuji TV reported that occupants of the car, a man and a woman who appeared to be in their 70s, were killed, while one passenger on the eight-car train suffered a neck injury.

Police said the bars at the crossing had been lowered and the alarm had sounded and are investigating why the car stopped on the tracks.

Train services on the line were delayed until about 3:30 p.m., JR said.
