I can say, based on first hand experience, most Japanese companies could care less about employee's well being. My (Japanese) brother-in-law (mid 40s) completed his cancer treatment earlier this year. He needs to take it easy for a while due to a high risk for relapse. He went back to work and his company has him traveling all over the place which gets him home around mid-night and he's back out the door early the next day. He is so exhausted but afraid of loosing his job if he complains. And afraid that if he lost his job no one would hire him because of his condition. They know his condition but doesn't seem to care. His most recent check up did not look so good. Employees must toughen up and stand their ground with these ruthless employers.

Yeah same here, wife's mother has pancreatic cancer, job didn't give her any free time to go to the hospital etc so she just flat out quit. She worked there for a long time too and I haven't seen ANY of her coworkers or superiors come over with best wishes. Corporate culture is cold as ice.

My Wife was treated well after being discovered with Breast-cancer, time off for visits, cash bonuses, etc. Her and my Company shared the same IT Health Insurance.
Both IT Companies really cared about their staff and helped a lot. Granted not the norm in more traditional Companies.

I had a pre cancer condition and told my boss I had to have it cut out so I needed a week off work. Instead of saying OK. Good luck, she said goodbye. Even though I’m fine and the operation took half a day, she said I am better to not work and recover. No long term contract, so had to find a new job quickly.

Surprise surprise.
since1981, I'm really sorry to hear about your brother in law.

If you're not going to die from overwork, you're going to die from cancer. Two choices. That's what they're saying.

"for cancer employees"
"cancer employees"?
Seriously? You think that's an appropriate way to refer to people?

But they do have compulsory annual medicals so that they know not to renew your contract when they finally drive you into sickness...
Do you really think it's for the well-being of the employee..??
