How about not giving her vast amounts of public money, if she is now a commoner she can get a job like the rest!

Princess Mako is a beauty.  She may cease being a princess, but her hubby would be wise to continue treating her as such.

She's on fire in this pic!

@ Aly - Nice one!

Thanks JT. Now I understand why you couldn't just come out and say "they are engaged". I knew there must have been ceremonies and formalities, guess I was thinking like a commoner

Gifting money is a traditional policy available in Asian countries like India and the process is named as Dowry! What is the purpose of this ritual in 21st century in which almost all of us are educated well?! #Job #earn #Salary

The Princess has the duck lips thing down pat.

Her fiancee held a press conference yesterday but answered every question with "I cannot speak about that at this point". It seems the IHA have given him his orders. But if you have been told to answer all questions with the same phrase there is little point in holding a press conference and wasting everyone's time.

Excellent point Scrote. Excellent point.  But its all about formalities in this case and very little about substance.

Oh gosh, this sounds like a right palava. I'm beginning to think Pippa Middleton's upcoming wedding and her greenhouse is going to be a simple affair compared to this.

Meh, what has she done for Japan or its people?

A lot less damage than Abe, his wife, AND the LDP as a whole.  And she's only going to get 1 lump sum.  Those bozos are going to be sponging off of us for a LONG time

I, like many others I am sure,  would only wish them a loving and long marriage. In all reality, she will probably revel in being not so much in the royal spotlight.

Pretty infomal article. My only gripe is this ; Abe (and tbe LDP) have been pushing for more involvement by women in the economics of the country. This means changinging the role of women in the country. The LDP control (through the diet) who can accend to the throne. The Imperial family is used as a symbol of the country's status quo. Wouldn't be just a smart idea to change the current policy to allow women to accend to throne, and thus cementing the idea that women are just as vital to Japan's preseverence as men are? People would complain about the timing, but with as much repect is given to the royals it would give LDP some pychological teeth in convincing companies to get women back into the work force.

Firstly I wish them both, the very best of health and good fortune in there new lives. Once the Princess has become a commoner, jumping a head in 15 -20 years time something happens to there marriage and it breaks down, they get divorced, my question is, will she become a princess again? does she regain her status? or once its gone its gone for ever?

I would assume it is one-way, as with one of my ancestors(Duke) who lost his title, castle, etc.

Visited the castle some 30+yrs ago.

Ron Barnes: Why cannot this young lady remain a princess when she marries her dna is royalty and always will be

I think you're confused about how DNA works.

She will unlikely see much of her family again since its very difficult for a common person to gain entry to the imperial palace.

Is this a joke? I've never heard that family members cannot visit. Kind of extreme isn't it?

If the Emperor wishes to see one of his Daughters or granddaughters, I am sure that this will happen, I am sure no one in the Royal house hold would say no to the Emperor.

100 million, isn't really a lot of money. It won't really buy you much of a place to live in within Central Tokyo these days where you can expect to pay for 4-5 times that amount for something semi-decent, but not really that large.

Never-the-less, it's Government money sourced from the Public, which could perhaps be better spent on providing food or even hostels, to the homeless who are now being seen in increasing numbers springing up around our City. And its not like they wont have a penny/cent/yen to spare between them.. her Husband to be, will be seen as an Up & Coming Lawyer with connections to the Royal Household... who wouldn't want to hire him!

As to the leaving the Royal Family, well that's the Japan Male dominated thing - indeed pretty much everywhere else too - just look at Family Trees (all follow the Male line). So nothing really new there.

Nope, not all, some also include the female, albeit in the past only where there has not been a male sibling, at least in Britain. Not sure for European monarchies where they had a more rigid male requirement and would bypass a female child of the deceased monarch for a more distant male. Now in Britain which ever is first born will be the succeeding monarch regardless of their sex.
