Police and health officials in Fukuoka said Tuesday that 149 students from Muromi elementary school have suffered food poisoning since Saturday. Fuji TV reported that the students were experiencing fever, nausea and diarrhea.
Of those, 16 were hospitalized and in no danger, officials said.
Health officials are investigating the possibility that the food poisoning was caused by the school lunches.
Muromi elementary school was ordered closed Tuesday for three days.

That"s too bad. Hope they recover soon. I live in Fukuoka and this is something that is scary. My daughter could have been affected by this. Someone, somewhere dropped the ball. I am a serious stickler for washing and scrubbing hands and I tell my child this constantly, when you come in, use the toilet, touch the railings, play in the sandbox, play with the dog, wash your hands and just with ONLY WATER! You need to properly disinfect your hands. I just hope they find out the root cause and make the necessary changes so that this doesn't happen again or at least minimize the chances of it spreading and contain it.

No. Totally on par with developed countries (Europe, Australia, etc). In the US it's particularly high, something like 7 times like Japan for number of cases and number of fatalities. That that should be lower everywhere, but that will always happen.
That doesn't make a difference as they would have the same norms. And both are less risky than if all kids are bringing their own lunch (particularly Japanese style bentos).

The big question is , are these meals prepared in the school kitchen or at the local lunch preparation center? Most schools are slowly building their own kitchens and doing away with outside companies.

Yes, it really does. It seems that every couple of weeks or so, you hear about mass food poisoning incidents. And that's just the reported cases (there are unreported ones too, if my Japanese friends' experiences are anything to go by).

I hope this is properly investigated as really if quality food is bought and looked after properly this kind of things should never happen. What`s the betting it is all swept under the carpet?
