At least they didn't skirt around the issue.

As much as I love sexy looking women, this is climbing a very slippery slope and it could very well possibly open the door to sexual harassment lawsuits and not to mention, it is a bit degrading, out of style and let's face it, it would bring out a lot of otakus that live for this stuff. This is one of those "what were they thinking" moments. I don't see anything good coming from this.
Mitch Cohen
Not a good idea Skymark Airlines.. as if these flight attendants weren't sexually harassed enough by losers making innuendo-laiden comments, now they have to bend forward to pick up food/drinks from their trolleys with these mini-skirts on. Are you trying to offer an opportunity to perv as part of your business strategy?
For ideas on how to be stylish without demeaning, check out some of these examples:

Skymark president said, "We won't impose the uniform on any of the cabin attendants who refuse to wear it."
Yeah...right. When do you refuse anything suggested by a superior in Japan?

How could it not be seen in this way? Nishikubo is a president in the service industry, but he clearly doesn't understand people.

"Mini skirt Skymark girls" are pretty and sexy, but SkyMark obasans and obachans..... hehe ))))
nath
Not exactly kawaii.
DudeDeuce
Skymark has lost a lot of business lately due to the fact their prices aren't really cheap since Peach and Jetstar came in. This will kind of help them fill their planes with otaku and businessmen.

I worry about the piss-head oyajis on business trips... We all know what they're like...

Oh for God's sake, let's stop trying to go against human nature.
Women are supposed to be sexy! Let's drink in their beauty and have an enjoyable flight.
Tokiyo
And you speak for all women when you say that?
sf2k
that's funny, I thought Japan was stuck in the 50's
zenkan
It really is "one step forward and ten steps back". All of you commenting on "women should be sexy, and remain young foever" - I pity your female relatives, friends (!) colleagues and so on.
moneyyen
Sexual Harassment??? First, you all have to understand what that word means before using it so openly. Next, so the girls don't want guys looking at them, complimenting them or making remarks??? Then don't do the job. Guys have different fantasies and ideas of Stewardesses. I would much rather be served by one of these young, good looking girls in a mini-skirt than these fat or old or pregnant ones that the US allows on their flights these days.
Ex-Expat
Here I was, preparing to vent my frustrations and echo most of the previous posters' comments. What wrong-headed person seriously things micros are a viable option for crew to wear, anymore? I mean, heck, most folks in aviation know that nylons practically should be banned for safety reasons, much less heels, blah, blah, blah...
Then I looked at the photo. Oh...dear. It's as though they commissioned Wal-Mart to make children's knock-offs of the 5th Element flight attendant costumes.
How unfortunate.

Bass Funk: You said the new miniskirt uniform is "out of style", by which I assume you mean out of fashion -- have you walked down a Japanese street recently?
profsid
Add some fabric and make the skirts into culottes.
Mirai Hayashi
Let em go! He's given the flight attendants a choice to wear what they like, so what's the problem here? Let them wear what they want. They flight attendants during the 60's-70's wore shorter skirts, if not the same length.
The president said he's given his employees a choice of whether to wear these uniforms or something more conservative. Besides, not everyone is pervert. I'd like to think that the majority of the men have enough self control not to sexually harass these women.
nath
Poor ladies. I can just imagine the terrible coercion....that they didn't need in order to dress like this!

"Oh for God's sake, let's stop trying to go against human nature. Women are supposed to be sexy! Let's drink in their beauty and have an enjoyable flight."
Great point and good use of "God's sake"!! Women are just objects and should be used only in the prime of their beauty and discarded and hidden away once past that designated point of being able to be eye candy for men, oh, and while you are at it, don't forget the happy-to-serve minority male stewards on cross-continental trains and shoe shine boys!! We should all return to those 19th and early 20th Century glory days where only ugly old men ruled! (note: this is sarcastic)
harvey pekar
Ha! I loved the reporting on this! Hypocrisy 101: The men on the news or morning show programs were saying how it may be difficult for the women to work like this and the possible sexual harassment, meanwhile EVERY NEWS or MORNING SHOW FEMALE ANNOUNCER WEARS THE SAME SHORT SKIRTS if not SHORTER!
And I don't think it's always by choice either.
gogogo
How they suppose to get drinks from the bottom of the cart without displaying all the duty free?
rickyvee
thank god they aren't imposing these uniforms on any american carriers.
Dennis Bauer
I'll bet a lot of guys that hang around the bottom of the escalators will use this airline :P
Elbuda Mexicano
What hypocrisy!! NO ONE HERE FROM THE USA remember when HOOTERS, yes HOOTERS had an AIRLINE back in the day?? All you had to have for HOOTERS airline, well take a wild guess, a great smile, friendly attitude and a big pair of lovely HOOTERS! Now, just because these flight attendants on Skymark have pretty dresses above the knee, oh all the WESTERN hypocrites come out of the wood work!! If you are white, man or woman and are so OFFENDED by pretty legs, great service, well go back to DELTA, AA or some other crappy airline where you can really enjoy that great service with the smile only a wild pitbull on steroids can offer!
Jean ValJean
For a short time there was Hooter's Air which boasted two actual Hooter's girls in the cabin in Hooter's attire in addition to the standardly clad cabin attendants. Unfortunately, it failed after hurricanes Rita and Katrina and the fuel cost increases.
I'd book on Skymark if they served some of Hooter's Buffalo Wings.
smithinjapan
Leave it to some Japanese oyaji to come up with this and then claim that complaints are "distorted views"! As for "those who refuse", they'll be grounded, I guarantee. I went out with a JAL flight attendant for some time and she was told that if she were groped she was not to chide the customer, but smile and move away.
FizzBit
I think some of us here are blowing this out of proportion. I just got back, using United, and those 45 to 55 year old men are not very appealing. No complaints on the service from what you'd expect from an unhappy work force. It was so nice to land in Narita and see some smiles (fake though they may be) and excellent customer service. Most people on planes are pretty docile these days and if there was any harassment, it would probably occure from other staff members and not travelers.
philly1
Good idea, profsid--as long as all the guys (pilots included) wear thigh-high shorts or kilts as well.
And Bill Adams, why make only the straight male travellers happy? We can all drink in beauty (when we can find it).
JTDanMan
What's with all the moralizing? Shouldn't the "independent conservatives" here support the free market in action here? !
I guess not.
I, on the other hand, support the invisible hand in cases such as this.
[And, yes, that is a bad joke...]
choiwaruoyaji
Excellent !
I'm flying Skymark Airlines.
Wolfpack
I find it strange how some people can simultaneously support a person's right to sexual freedom and at the same be so prudish as to be scandalized over a woman in a miniskirt. Come on folks we are not living in the 19th century! If the airline is able to hire stewardesses that would like to wear those outfits shouldn't that be the woman's choice? It's not as if they are drafted for the job - it is voluntary of course. Not everyone, especially younger people, are as uptight about the human body as so many on here seem to think.
JTDanMan
Wolfpack
Well well well. It looks likes we finally found something we agree on. Fancy that.
One thing about those young folk, though, and its bad: In the states, young men are more prudish now that when I was in college. All these personal shower stalls, and walking around in towels, it's as if they are, well,
women.
Knox Harrington
Wolf,
Yeah, I bet you wouldn't be one of the complaining people when your comapny suddenly told you to wear a thong and a tight tshirt to work. As part of your compulsory uniform. After all, what's wrong with expressing a little sexual freedom, right?
Fukuppy
Am I wrong for LOVING it?
dcog9065
I don't see any issue with this. If these women don't want to wear these uniforms, they don't have to apply for a job there and go through the incredibly long interview process which would be a clear indicator of what is to come. If customers don't like it, fly another airline, there are plenty of budget airlines in Japan these days.
FizzBit
What would be better is if those women standing behind the boss were flipping him the bird ;)
roughneck
Add some cute guys in short shorts too...problem solved.
nath
Miniskirts are a classic 1960's era look. Japan and Skymark are on the cutting edge of the latest fashion trend!
fabyoit
God bless Skymark! Although, I would recruit flight attendants from Kyabakura to avoid performance problems from "innocent" personnel :-)
White_Shinobi
If you don't like Burger king's uniform, you can still serve burgers at mcdonalds... Just saying
AngieStars
What about the women who already worked for the airline before this new uniform was introduced? And while the president pays lip service saying that they won't ''force'' anyone to wear it, there's a large amount of social stigma in Japanese workplaces for people who go against the flow. This means that women who are uncomfortable are likely to feel pressured to wear it anyway in order to maintain workplace harmony or keep their job.
It's not always easy to just walk away and find a new job, either, before anyone makes that suggestion. Everyone has bills to pay and needs to fulfill, and sometimes the job they have is the only one they were able to get.
Drew Chappell
Its not that bad....they look great! Look at all the women in Japan and how they dress....ITS JAPAN people....a great look and quite tasteful! YES, im sure there will be those that oppose.....I for one (even though I will never fly Skymark) think there is nothing wrong with this....and in a post earlier....guys in short shorts...problem solved...lol

To attract more customers? Which demograph are they focusing on? Dirty old men? I think they just lost all their female customers.
scottslabaugh
These women look stylish and professional and the CEO said it is their choice to wear or not. If they are harassed, punish the harasser. A small disgusting segment of males grope women on the train, then all men are punished by over crowding in the cars because the female only cars which sometimes are not full.
LBW2010
It's a little bit much. ANA stewardesses are supremely attractive in the longer skirts.
Don't push it.
Badge213
If it matters, what is left out of the article is that the uniforms (if implemented) would only be used on the A330 flights. All other SkyMark flights operated (by boeing aircraft) would continue to use (their "uniforms").
If anyone has ever flown SkyMark you would note that their ground staff and cabin crews actually don't wear "traditional" uniforms tobegwin with. Many times it's just either a poloshirt or flightweight jacket with the company emblem. As a LCC they have dispensed with expensive uniforms (other than the miniskirt one proposed here).
kolohe
Some people misunderstood the fact that Skymark Airlines is introducing this super-mini skirt as part of introducing its Airbus A330 only for six months from May 31. It has had a different uniform, meaning that inflight attendants are now faced with this newer uniform.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6U-snRFNIc

I can see the concern, but these minis dont look that extreme to me. Compared to the dress of some high-school girls passing my house ever day, they positively conservative. Relax people.

Don't crash and give me free beer. They are the golden rules of traveling by air. I can survive without a perv. Does Skymark charge for beer?

Meh. hardly a looker in the bunch.
@Jimizo They certainly do charge for beer so best to have a couple before you board.
Jimizo
@Davestrousers Thanks. I remember being charged for a beer on an British LCC and was mortified. Someone said they were thinking of charging to use the bog. I'm not joking.

whats wrong, make it better pay and choice to work on that carrier and I am sure there will be no shortage of girls with shorter skirts enjoying to do the work, sick of you prudes got to some church and away from public view please. some women actually enjoy looking flirty and sexy and got the body to pull that.
Alex Einz
"whats wrong, make it better pay and choice to work on that carrier and I am sure there will be no shortage of girls with shorter skirts enjoying to do the work, sick of you prudes got to some church and away from public view please. some women actually enjoy looking flirty and sexy and got the body to pull that."
dcog9065
@Angie Stars: Women already working don't need to wear it. The President has stated in public that women don't need to wear them if they don't want to. The president would be lynched by his own company and the union if he backtracks on this statement. If anything, this works out far, far better for the women working as flight attendants in this company. Furthermore, there are on reports of any power harassment related to the refusal to wear these uniforms, so there is no evidence whatsoever that any power harassment has or ever will take place.
Nessie
Next thing it'll be mirrored aisle floors in first class.
Henry Geßner
I... guess I have to use this airline then.
Cool down. Luckily, Japan isn't Saudi Arabia.
IparryU
I have a couple friends who became cabin attendants just to wear their uniform.... This whole "women as a commodity" thing has be going on forever in every culture. Japan shouldn't really complain as they use AKB as a prop to sell anything and everything...
If it brings in customers and does not cause issues, then let them do it. Plus it isn't "mandatory", but I doubt you will see many girls refuse to wear it.
AramaTaihenNoYouDidnt
I suppose if no laws are being broken...it will be more practical for Skymark, if they really mean in attracting potential customers, allow this fashion statement be worn by voluntary staff at terminals only, meaning employees wanting to wear the outfit use them at ticket counters or service desks. Flight attendants are surely subject to harrassment - very counterproductive Skymark!!
Ranger_Miffy2
Disgusting. If I was forced to wear that short dress and work the airplane aisles, you can be sure I would stop by the local conbini or ladies' wear section in the general clothing store and buy those speciality-of-Japan black panties that specifically hide "that area" from upskirters and gawkers. Sure thousands are sold to young gals in the rolled up pleated plaid skirts of their school uniforms.
David Foley
Haha. Jimizo. That is exactly my mantra when looking for a flight. No matter how sh1tty the flight is, if I get off at destination with a nice buzz, then I am 100 percent satisfied.
lostrune2
For gals who don't have the body though, don't bother.
CGB Spender
If it's after the opinion of the majority of JT readers then female flight attendants should wear an astronaut suit! God forbid! You could see some female legs!
Tokiyo
So only attractive people should dress how they like?
CGB Spender - I think its more the attitude of the men not being able to keep it in their pants and talking about the ladies like a piece of meat more than the issue of short skirts.
FizzBit
I'm sure this would never fly in the States. Too many female business travelers.
Alex Einz
Wow Fizzbit, you got lots of catching up to do, do you think women dont like seeing sexy women in short skirts ?
Mikanojo
Even though i can already see from the comments that some people will disagree.. miniskirts do NOT cause sexual harassment. Perverts do. Just as miniskirts do not cause rape. Rapists do.

It's not the legs that are the issue, is it? Ultra-mini uniforms may be fine for some physically inactive jobs, but if you expect a CA to look forward to giving you a peepshow while she works, you'd better look forward to fetching and carrying your own drinks, meals, sick-bags, blankets etc. in future!

What I meant was, as a flight attendant on a plane, close quarters, drunken businessmen, do you really think it's a good idea? Personally, I do not. At least on the street, the girl can get away if she is groped, but on a plane....
Louis Tan
What about those in the milk bars and restaurants? Did they cause any concerns to customers or employees? Pornography is everywhere in Japan and yet in Japan Playboy and other lie magazines have the particular groin and below section painted over. What about Japanese manga especially those depicting female students with huge breasts and in action. This is nothing but hypocrisy. With Skymark Airlines ANA and JAL are going to lose their male customers. Well, if they can't beat Skymark Airlines how about nude air-hostesses?

i saw the photo and I thought : "Oh, North Korea's presidential plane...". Where did they find some clothes so alt-modish and ugly ?
These women are attractive, even if they have passed their junior high years. FA are selected in the 10% prettier. I'm sure all of them have a good fashion sense and look totally stunning in their own clothes. That said, they just look plain and vulgar on the photo.
They are made to dress how they hate ! Nobody should be "invited" by their management to wear bags that don't do them any favor and sends an ambiguous message at the work place.
Are their any ? I was thinking about relooking the ossans that manage that shop. Aren't male all cute when they are 6 month old ? They could be made to wear a light blue sponge onesie...
Ranger_Miffy2
OK, OK, OK. At this point in the comments, I suggest womena wear underwear and men flight attendants too! Sheesh. Really, this whole thing is just ludicrous.
Neo_Rio
All I have to say is, that if you make women feel bad about looking sexy, they'll stop doing it, and you'll miss out.

Mad Men revisited....what year is it Skymark?
LuvKatsuji
This flight is not for family nor for my husband. It is promoting "sexism"and targeting for pervert passengers only.
In Japan, there are train cabins designed for 'Women Only'. Here we have a special 'Men Only' Low Cost Carrier.
Think... Haven't we got enough of "Groping" & "Up skirt photo"'s issues? And here the Stupid CEO is saying for attracting more customers. This implied your "quality" customers are all will only fly with you if women dressed less and willing to expose more part of their body.
I am sorry, sexy doesn't needs to be dressed less if you Want. Some women have sexy smile or sexy eyes looking.
After all, we don't want to promote sexiness on an aircraft! A pilot or co-pilot might gets erection after watching their stewardess bend over or reaching up high to get luggages on the top cabin. Pilots could started to have fantasy and lost control over their plane.
We don't want to have another tragedy please!
Argus Tuft
So it's only a coincidence that airlines only hire young, attractive, and thin women ?
NathalieB
Im all for dressing up and looking good in the right circumstances, but 33,000 feet above the ground Im more interested in safety, someone being in control, and getting my wine with my meal, not getting girl-crushes and watching the men making twits of themselves (without the w). I can do any of that when I land. These girls need a uniform they can actually do their job in.
And as for "not compulsory" - yeah right, who ever refuses an order in Japan? And yes, girls applying for jobs have the choice, but what about the ones already there? So they have to lose their jobs because yet another runt of a Japanese CEO decides he wants to sell his company with eye candy?
Selchuk Driss
It's not voluntary if you are faced with losing your job.
JTDanMan
Oikawa
There are no male flight attendants, and that is the point.
If you think Hooters is sexist, then open your own place and call it Schlongers.
Here's the bottom line: many men look at women as sex objects. It is our right to.
OldHawk
Because it's the woman's fault for dressing that way? Talk about going retro! Are we really back to that mindset? And yes, I fully understand the difference between women being fashionable in their personal clothes and the "voluntary" (Japanese word for mandated) work uniform. It's only for six months so if it fails, it will be a lesson of what not to do for other airlines. If it's a success, let's hope none of the American airlines copy the idea. We can't even use the word "stewardess" any more!
Personally, I would love to see an airline paint their planes in a retro livery. It's not a project for a budget airline, of course. But that's just the flight geek in me.
gelendestrasse
Sexual harassment? In Japan? Really? (sarcasm....)
Tahoochi
Could be worse... could be Hooters Airline (Yes, it actually did exist)
bass4funk
Exactly, it seems like most of the guys on this thread are thinking about one thing. What's wrong with the current uniforms or slacks that they wear? Ahhh, not exposing enough leg, right? I'm not being an old prude, I love sexy women as much as the next man, but let's not make the focus and flying ONLY about how short the skirts should be. These women are NOT sex objects. I think the current uniform is just as sexy and also, sexiness comes from how you carry yourself, seems like a lot of guys here don't care about sexual radiance, but about visual sexiness.
Wolfpack
@Knox
Don't be so sure ;-) This isn't Victorian times anymore. Not everyone views the world in the same way everyone else does. Nothing wrong with giving people the choice of doing what they want.
NathalieB
Personally, if I was one of those girls, I would stuff a sock down the front of my pants, just to see the look on the male passengers face when the inevitable grope happens :) !
missbatten
Actually, there are (and I do mean male CAs and not pursers). There are even Japanese male CAs...unfortunately, they are not being hired by Japanese airlines. Japanese airlines don't apparently REQUIRE applicants for CA positions to be female, they just don't "happen" to hire men.
Acamero
... Ha ha...? I can't really tell if you're joking or a serious rape threat.

Are these women in charge of safety or are they in charge of turning men on? Pick one. Hooters airlines had "party girls" for entertainment purposes only and they had flight attendants who wore normal uniforms. Oh yea, and they are out of business. Skymark, sounds like a dumb move. You have narrowed your customers down to only men and perverted men at that. Any Asian airline has attractive flight attendants as well. Nothing new. A large bulk of discount airlines fly families. Find another way to attract customers. Lower prices or offer more services. This is cheap and lousy.

Compare to US airlines such as United where the stewardesses are treated as normal people and allowed to grow old with dignity and keep their jobs. That's something I find very "attractive".
jpreda
i don't see a problem here.
Kimokekahuna Hawaii
Victoria Secret could sponsor their undies that would have a smiley face or company logo... and website address.
ribstick
"Excuse me, I dropped my pen across the aisle. Could you pick it up for me? Yes, over there." - Will be uttered 1001 times on Skymark.
Wolfpack
@CraigHicks:
"Grow old with dignity"? Is this some kind of joke? Are you trying to make a point about employment in the service industry with like older people not living in poverty and without medical care? We are talking about a relatively low level service job. Yes, they get training for potential emergency situations but very few ever have a reason to use that training.
The stewardesses on US airlines are terrible at customer service and relate poorly to passengers compared to those on international airlines such as JAL. And is it so bad for customers to want to be tended to by relatively young and attractive people that are actually enthusiastic about their jobs? I don't think so.
slumdog
Personally, I like the regular CA uniforms. These seem to lack any real fashion sense.
knight_of_Honour
I don't see what all the fuss is about since mini skirts are in fashion all over the world. And I'm sure the women know how to squat down correctly to reach the lower part of their carts, not bend over. All of this is ridiculous supposition, not substantiated in any manner. And who are all these complainers? I'm 71 and see no problem if these ladies are following current clothing fashions. They are certainly not exposing themselves, and nearly all men, and many women, enjoy seeing a nice pair of female legs on occasion. I saw a few yesterday at the grocery store. Of course there may be a few jerks that make an occasional problem. But they should be able to restrain themselves for short flights.
kcjapan
Looks like a dopey ad. As a practical matter, mini skirts are party wear not professional attire. Flying is safely and courteously reaching my destination. Keep your standards high and skip the adolescent cheesecake. That's what airlines should be, it's not a gin mill, it's an airplane.
jj1067
Remember Southwest Airlines? What's the surprise? Americans forget everything about themselves.
isoducky
I say let Skymark hang itself. A couple cases of sexual hurrasment at 25,000 feet and a few scuffles with lewd passengers leads to Skymark paying out hush money, an advertising campaign designed to guarantee safety when flying, and a bump in price. Everyone wins.
lostrune2
Hahahaha, hey if we gonna be stuck in a sardine can for hours on end, screw PC and alleviate the situation by showing beautiful flowers - it's just human nature to look at beautiful flowers rather than mundane bushes.
jamplass
To those of you who think this kind of skimpy attire is a good idea, how would you feel about your own wife/daughter/sister/mother wearing this to work and having to bend over as she serves a customer? Not so sexy now me thinks...
Wolfpack
@jamplass
You make it sound like wearing a miniskirt is akin to being a stripper.
nukepro
I would be nice to have some good looking girls as stewardess again.
In USA now they are the aged surely bitches pretending they don't have to be nice because "its for your safety"
Now it looks like the age of "political correctness" has reached Japan, how sad.
