It sure would be nice to know the details of the discovery. Was it just locked in a trunk the family had been ignoring? Was it in an attic or something? How did it come into their possession? Was it kept as a secret?

The manuscripts were "lost" perhaps because the owners lost interest in them and did not appreciate their value so they became forgotten.
