On duty at Japan's 'last-chance' hospital for coronavirus

My friend's wife is a nurse and she could only wish or dream this is "dramatic". This is real life champ.....and these people are risking their lives trying to help others. A much higher calling than posting some callous and rude remark on the internet.

Vince Black, Bamboozler. What shameful comments. You obviously haven't been personally touched by the virus, nor are you in the at risk group. If it's so easy why don't you go volunteer at a hospital

Reading this article makes me sad and think about all the horrors that people who caught COVID-19 (The Chinese Communist Party Virus that came out of Wuhan) and the agonizing hell they went through....It seems as if this pandemic is no where close to over and Japan is no longer declaring a state of emergency as of today I believe.

I have a strong sense of feeling that a second wave of infections is going to hit very hard here in Japan as we all think business as usual,nothing aint happening until i see it before my eyes or even worse having to endure the virus. Eventually lets hope that all hospitals employee will be NOT be resigning in fear of virus death. I am starting to question what has Japan done since Wuhan spread? It feels as if the hospitals are all incompetent and has no means of saving you. You may laugh at this comment but until it happens to you or I we all probably wont take it seriously. I just hope for the best outcome and that there is treatment for this wicked virus.

It was heartbreaking reading about the lonely way these patients are dying with last goodbyes being said through an iPad.

It's sad enough "the regular way" with people giving looks of hope, smiles, or tears while holding the hands of the soon to be departed but this video chat way really sucks although I know it's the only way.

If you listen to the trolls for weeks now they said Japan is a failure. How their half of country Korea is a success story and Japan a huge failure. Even the foreign media started to eat the Korean propaganda.

So judging by the date on the photo, this was from 2 weeks ago? I wonder what the situation is now. Supposedly there are only 41 in critical condition in all of Tokyo and 517 hospitalized overall.

In Europe and the UK, some reports say about half of all deaths are from Care Homes. People possibly still carrying the virus are released from hospitals into Care Homes, which is an abomination. Why send potential carriers into such a vulnerable setting?

Emergency accommodation could be set up in disused or mothballed military camps, or on military training areas.

My understanding is that Japan (and other Asian nations) have far more respect for their elderly relatives, and are far less likely to pack them off into Care Homes (please correct me if I'm wrong).

We're all obviously rooting for the patients, but I have to agree, as I was reading down the article, the tone is a bit reminiscent of USA Today/Daily Mail. But I think this is journalist Mari Saito's style, this is more journalism from the trenches rather than broadsheet commentary

I have always known St. Mariana University Hospital to be a caring hospital with highly qualified professionals on duty everyday. My daughter was born there and I myself has had 2 surgeries done there. It is a Catholic Hospital and part if their work ethics may come from their Christian roots. I can say with all confidence, they care. Bravo to them. I doff my hat off for the work they are doing. One bright spot in the healthcare delivery system in Japan.

I have heard good things about a few hospitals in the Kawasaki area. There is another good one I believe near a university in Omori.

And to all those that claim the virus is a conspiracy, doesn't exist, or say people arent dying from it, but some other reason.... quit drinking the koolaid and wake up!

I think the only thing worse than dying this way, with no family around, and a doctor or nurse holding an ipad up to them to hear their family, is dying all alone in a house because the government authorities charged with taking care of these sick people, wont find them a hospital!

I can relate to the above story, I live very close to a large hospital here in the UK, some of my close friends work there, some in the operating theatre some in ICU, one sent me a message the other day saying how heart breaking it is watching members of there families pass away, " its so sad that families could not be with there loved ones in there last moments and having to hold a telephone to the ear of patients on ventilators whilst there loved one said there good-byes" @ Vince I hope that your not put in this position as its not an over reaction at all its the truth, medical staff are stretched to the limit, and some people don't see that or appreciate it, these staff members are going to need some sort of support when this dies down, when I say support I dont necessarily mean money, they will need emotional support with some sort of counciling.

Let's show each other kindness love and compassion by not opening the economy just yet.

Two things Japan need to focus

Make all the rooms of the hospital large and spacious.

All roads to be wide.

Why does the media always want to keep on frightening people although on a positive note its good to see at least one hospital is taking in Covid-19 patients when others turn them away.

Why don't you send a message of support to the hospital staff by email? They would appreciate it. These health care workers are on the front lines every day in every country. There is nothing overly dramatic about telling their story. It is probably underdramatic, considering how much suffering and death they see in their work.

Health care workers in Japan and all over the world are heroes and I thank you for your efforts.
