Model in altered Ralph Lauren ad for Japan speaks out

Gotta agree. That looks awful.

She's a whiner. It's modeling! If for whatever reason they don't deem you suitable for representing their products, you look for another job. If a singer suddenly loses pitch or begins sounding raspy, they get replaced. Life sucks sometimes.

How grotesque.

Regardless of their motives for firing her, how incompetent they must be to release such a foul image by accident.

Pathetic company of pathetic people producing pathetic products for people so pathetic they think it's all worthwhile.

While I am totally against people who do not pay attention to the weight and physical appearance, I cannot stand it when businesses have such absurd contracts. It maybe that this model's metabolism or some condition just does not function well at a lower weight.

Was this ad specially made for Japan? In all the other articles it was never said that the ad was for Japan but if it is specially made for Japan, I understand why they made it - big head and unproportinally small thin body is the standard for beauty here.

I am 1.8 metres and 55 kilos. I get caught out by my annual health checkup every year because of it. We aren't overweight, just overtall.

Modeling is a tough gig and it depends on timing and what you inherited from your parents. Its tough for her but she can't complain, modeling from 15 to 23 ain't a bad stretch and is a lifetime in that industry. Hard to have a lot of sympathy as the industry doesn't exactly hide what it is.

According to most medical charts available online, the weight range for a woman 5'9" is 128 - 168 lbs. According to the University of Wisconsin Medical School's slightly different system of calculating weight/percentage of body fat, the "ideal" weight for the same height would be 145 lbs. At 5'9" and 119 lbs., Ms. Hamilton is underweight. Not that anyone in the fashion world or advertising cares about that. Be vigilant. These people are not our friends.

chuckers...no kidding!! Actually, on weight charts for other countries as well, 54 kilos is DEFINITELY underweight. Says something about the industry if they have to alter a picture of an underweight human being to make her look even thinner!

It was one thing to make her look thinner, but she doesn't even look human...she looks like a cartoon drawing!

It is sad that this ad was made for Japan and was used in Japan.

The photo is so obviously digitally altered, I'm not sure why this is a problem. It's when they try to make the emaciated look appear normal that most of the damage is done.

Of course, people should also be complaining because they use Photoshop to remove skin blemishes and discolourations to make the models appear perfect.

There is something under this article that is not kosher. She is having some sort of other battle and some higher up dude that might have been snuffed by her decided to let the photo distortions get published knowing it would cause an out cry. Corporation and male bullying in my opinion. She should start her own modeling company if she was savvy enough to have invested well with her OWN company or parents helping.

A size 0 or 2 or 4 is perfectly normal for some people and way too skinny for others. My wife is a size 0 at 105lbs and 5'1 not anorexic by any means. A friend of mine is a size 4 at 5'7 and 130lbs also not anorexic. I hate the fact that somehow people who are overweight want to justify themselves. Sure there are eating disorders but why present women the idea that being overweight is ok. By the way I didn't see the image and am not familiar with the model but her weight and height doesn't sound out of line to begin with.

The photo is obviously altered, no normal person would mistake it for a real photo. Lots of ads have people's faces posted on top of cartoon illustrations, and nobody would think the ad was trying to say any person really looks like this. See for yourself.

She obviously has an unrelated dispute and is using this as ammo. I'm sure Ralph Lauren slapped her upside the head and slashed her tires too while she's at it.
