So the powers that be introduced the mongooses to try and solve a problem, only creating a bigger one that has taken years and probably tons of yen to fix. Sometimes we humans shouldn't try to control nature, we end up screwing things up worse.
Hercolobus
The colonizers brought a lot of invasive species around the World. And for that matter traders of animals as pets.

Interestingly, Mongoose busters as they are known here on Amami, are now focusing on trapping stray cats, which are predating on bird life and the black rabbits.
They keep the name to avoid criticism from cat-lovers.

Any luck reducing habu? Nasty scary things they are

Mongoose busters. We could use some of them where we are to get rid of the stray cats. Interestingly, Amami rabbits are still killed by the infernal internal combustion engine cars running amok on Amami. It may be time to eradicate either the cars or their drivers now that the mongoose is gone.
see https:// www.env.go.jp /en/nature/nps/park /amami/effort. html for more information on mongoose control on Amami

They could have relocated a number of mongooses to zoos in Japan (not all but many).

Similar problems in the Caribbean. Brought in to combat snakes, but have pretty much wiped out certain species of ground-nesting birds.

Mongoose are social animals, who could kill these adorable creatures
Desert Tortoise
It was Japanese themselves who introduced Mongoose to Amami-Oshima Island. A good idea that backfired unfortunately.

Any impact on the habushu industry?

One should find out what Habu eats and whether their population will explode if Habu is eradicated.
nandakandamanda
No one is discussing eradicating Habu, though, right, DT?

This is incredibly good news for Amami, which is itself an incredible place. A mighty effort, Amami has a lot of bush that is pretty inaccessible.
Interesting. I assume they have had to make a new kind of trap for moggies. They had a very specialized tubular one with a lardy bait in it for the mongeese / mongooses if memory serves me right.
