Up to 500 to 1000 students might benefit! I guess if you're one of them it is great but that is a paltry number and as usual merely window dressing. I have yet to see the Japanese Govt. ever do anything big... everything is miniscule and mainly designed to somehow placate the voters into a false sense of benevolence.

to expand academic support for foreign children as the country looks to secure foreign labor amid the declining population.

It's not about welfare of those foreign children and their family, it's all about securing foreign talent that already aware about Japanese culture and language, remember that.

Among the foreign students 60% are Chinese students.... they get free education and monthly allowance for free accommodation and perks from Japanese tax payers.

These Chinese students are selected by CCP as spies and offered govt jobs. They come here to loot the technology and information from Japan.

Japanese tax payers are paying for them... What a pity???

And look at Japanese students.... 80% of High school graduates can not go to university in Japan. Because of very high fees... They have to get Bank loan and have to pay many other expenses So they give up the dream of higher education and end up working in a factory. In those factories higher jobs are held by Chinese who studied here in Japan with Japanese money.

This is the fucxxing situation here in Japan. No one wants to address this issue.. Because boasting china is a propaganda ... and they get paid from CCP through different channels..

I would guess that most ‘foreign students’ in Japan would prefer the greener pastures and higher wages available in most other countries.

If that is the case there would be no interest in a degree from a Japanese University either, it would be a disadvantage in the international market. Those that choose to enroll in a university in Japan are more interested in remaining in the country.

The graduates would go overseas if they get paid better salary packages. Promises and requests to stay and work in japan would only work if it becomes the right thing to do for themselves after graduation. If the payments are inferior, it wouldn’t work.

However, it’s a good thing to extend scholarship to foreign students with likelihood of staying in Japan.

Another things that not being mentioned by this article is that many empty seat in Japanese universities, those universities having difficulties to get new students. So this kind of favor by JGovt money , not only they want labor but also to help those universities survive by getting students.

.

Other path those foreign kids can easily go to their home country where education is affordable, while improving their English, they can go back to Japan if they want. Their English won't be improving if they stay in Japan anyway.

So they are going to include foreign children who have completed elementary, jr. and senior high school to get the same advantages as the Japanese kids in those same classes? I assume their parents have been paying tax this whole time... Then why should they not be entitled to these benefits/

On the other hand thousands of foreign students come to Japan on scholarships paid by the Japanese tax payer. Many use nepotism and corruption in their home countries to get on these programs. This money should be used for Japanese students.

@Mr Kipling

This money should be used for Japanese students.

Not all Japanese high school students, want to continue to university. With labor shortage in Japan they can easily find a job, not a good one. However these people already had enough with school system, so anywhere they can make money and it's not school, it's good for them.

sakurasuki...

Agreed, many of the 704 "universities" in Japan are not with attending. Sadly many companies will not employ anyone without spending 4 years at one of these pointless, expensive social clubs.

It's hard for any foreign worker to move up in any government field or company, let alone make a decent wage unless you go the independent way. I'd say if you stay, make your own business after some experience in any field - otherwise, you are just wasting a lot of time and effort.

Also, getting a solid construction skill for home repair, maintenance, or building is a great way to secure a career. As this population gets less and less skilled workers, there are far more opportunities for employment that lasts.

What I find offensive is what about the Japanese children in orphanages who are sent on their way at 16 or 18 with a small paper bag and a small amount of money and thrown out to find their own way in life many of times. What is the reason that this segment of population and the most important left out of the government talks? What is being done to make life easier on these children and young adults to make life easier on them and allow them to be adopted and stop putting up roadblocks and so they cannot find their forever homes?

The logic is the same! Women are having children because it is too expensive to have children. Students are pursuing higher education because the cost is too expensive. Why have a baby if you can't raise a baby, whey go to a university when you will have huge loans that you can't afford or struggle your entire life to pay back on measly wages. Universities have empty seats because the Japanese students can't afford the tuition, the Japanese government know this but refuse to act upon making the universities more accessible for the people but it is also a drawn on immigration in the name of educational talent.

Universities have empty seats because the Japanese students can't afford the tuition.

Universities have empty seats because they continued to expand the number of Universities even though the number of children and thus potential students was dropping. There are now not enough bums to fill the seats.

WELL SAID, MARC!

And very true!

Harsh but sensible. If kids are born here or mostly raised here, there is a higher likelihood that they will stay for life here, and investing on their future is good for the country. On the other hand, foreign students who come here to do university work and who get scholarships may soon depart for other countries and never return, and so the investment on them will not be as efficient.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Yes! Educate them and they will stay here and work. Japan needs all the brains it can get.
