A 35-year-old woman and her two-year-old son were killed when their car crashed head-on with a tanker in Yokoshibahikari, Chiba Prefecture, on Sunday.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 12 noon. Police said footage taken from the tanker's drive recorder showed the car, driven by Megumi Urahama, veering over the center line into the path of the tanker driven by a 36-year-old man, Fuji TV reported.

Police said it took about 30 minutes to get Urahama and her son Sho, who was in the back seat, out of the wreckage. They were taken to hospital where thy were pronounced dead. The driver of the tanker was not injured.

The accident occurred on a curve along the road with one lane on each side. The speed limit is 70 km/hour

That's tragic.

I wonder if the video from the tanker shows whether the driver wasn't paying attention/speeding or might have had some kind of medical emergency.

Thoughts not only to the deceased's friends and loved ones but to the tanker driver too. Must have been horrific.

She likely had a left curve, but came into it too fast and couldn't stay in her lane. That, or using her smartphone, or paying attention to her kid. In any case, sad news.

Was the child restrained? Probably not. If her smart phone can be recovered then it should be examined to see if she was using it at the moment of impact.

Was it a kei car?

@VinceBlack,

It says that her son was in the rear of the vehicle......so she seemed to be a responsible parent......would be interesting to see if she was using her device if she had one at the point of impact.I agree with you......so many text/cellphone users on the roads.

Was it a kei car?

The article could be about Godzilla crushing a car with his foot and guaranteed you’d have somebody on here making a glib comment about kei cars.

Sadly, there is a possibility that it was not accidental...

showed the car... veering over the center line into the path of the tanker

The phrase "veering into the path" sounds a bit ominous to me,

considering similar incidents in the past that involved a stressed parent.

The 'drive recorder footage' ('dashcam footage' in English...)

will be useful in the investigation.

Hold on......lemmie go check.

What does it matter?
