A 26-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter were killed after their car crashed into a truck at an intersection in Gifu City on Thursday morning.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. TBS reported that there were traffic lights at the intersection and street lighting provided good visibility. A two-lane prefectural highway and a national highway with three lanes on each side connected at this intersection.
Police identified the two dead as Yuri Kawaguchi and her daughter Haruna. Police said they were on their way home after visiting Yuri's parents.
The 70-year-old driver of the truck sustained light injuries to his head and arms.
Police are questioning him about the cause of the accident.

So sad. RIP

Can't comment objectively without more details, but in any case RIP to the mother and child.

How awful. The lack of traffic in the wee hours lulls people into a false sense of security, and lack of sleep makes us less alert.
Was the car a kei? The sooner these death traps are phased out the better.

26 years old is bad enough, but dying at 6 years old is really terrible.
Hope it was quick.

Well, obviously, one of them went through a red light. Why doesn't japan have red light cameras and surveillance cameras on all major intersections? Their police force runs on a revenue system and for the amount of red-light-runners I see every day it would triple their revenue every week, not to mention it would also reduce the amount of fatalities like this one.

what a waste for a young mother and her child to go and the old fart to survive, especially in an aging society...wish it had been the other way around.

Truck drivers are bad enough, now add alcohol to the equation. Oh my goodness...what a loss. I sure feel sorry for the father/husband. This is not right.

So, so tragic, my heart goes out to the father/husband and family left behind.

Great point, @Disillusioned,
Traffic light cameras are great at improving driver behaviour.

I often see trucks making the light or running it here. Sure trucks have the advantage over cars in a collision and you can bet they all know it when going through red lighs.

Thanks to 'Gobshite' for that informative link. According to the video, the victim had a least one other daughter (not involved in the accident). Police arrested the truck driver for driving under the influence of alcohol. The accident occurred on Route 256 and the truck is a Toyota Canter car transporter, approximately 3000 kg. Driver's name is Shuichi ADACHI.
