A 37 year-old woman died when her car collided with a power pole in KitaKyushu City early Tuesday morning. Her 7-year-old son in the back seat survived but his right arm was broken in the accident, police said.
A passer-by discovered the badly damaged vehicle in Moji Ward at around 3.15am. Minako Fujita, a housewife from Kokuraminami Ward, was removed from the vehicle but attempts to save her life failed, police said.
Her son was covered in a blanket and laying across the back seat at the time of the accident, where he remained and waited for an estimated 30 minutes before help arrived. His mother lost consciousness on impact, police said.
There were no brake marks on the road and police suspect the woman fell asleep at the wheel or missed the oncoming curve.

This is sad. I don't know what the circumstances were in this case but it is difficult to understand why someone would be out with a baby at 3am. Unless the accident happened a few hours earlier and it was just discovered at 3:15am.

condolences to the family though...

Or, she was texting on her cell-phone, checking her make-up or lighting a fag! One would also have to conclude, if the kid was laying on the back seat he was not wearing a seat belt.

Maybe he was sleeping because of being out so late...

Why on earth did it take 30 minutes for help to arrive? Especially if the accident happened in a populated area.

Seatbelt free kids are the norm here. Part of the 'It will never happen to me' mindset.

i thought "collided" means both parties were moving. I'm fairly confident the power pole wasn't. that the child was still on the back seat and not out the front window suggests he was wearing a seatbelt.

The child was seven years old.

"Power pole"? That's a new one to me.

Why do parents put their lives and their kids lives in danger when "if" she did fall asleep. To drive in that condition with a child in tow. Now the child is motherless. What a shame.

Sounds like the kid was hella-lucky as the story makes out he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Tragic. Just wondering why the 7 year old wasn't in bed at that time.
