At least the reactor work was halted.

Poor Kumamoto - it needs a break from bad news

Mt Aso is a little zit within a massive caldera, like Yellowstone, or the bay around Mt Sakurajima. When it really blows we all get buried.

On the news they were saying the ash from last night's explosive eruption rose to 11,000 meters (35,000 ft?) and it will be falling 500 km eastwards, over Osaka and beyond...

Earthquakes are primarily caused by the movement of plate techtonics whereas volcanoes are caused by the build up of Magna and whilst some earthquakes are caused by magma (and are very localised) a volcanic eruption does not signify a major earthquake is imminent

Magma... one can not simply say it just once without breaking into a Dr Evil voice and repeating it a few times. Mmmaaaggmmaa.

On a serious note, Mount Aso has been doing this dance for decades and hopefully these somewhat little belches help relieve it of built up pressure. When it settles down again and if you're brave enough, I recommend a drive up there and a walk around. It is quite breath taking to see in all its glory.

Might explain why even in Osaka we got alerts about it.

Lets hope this is not the start of something bigger. There can be a connection between volcano eruptions and earthquakes due to plate tectonics
