Municipalities expect Tokyo Olympics to bring more foreign visitors

The low Pound Sterling with the threat of Brexit might hurt the chances of Brits traveling overseas...

Some kind of circulation plan for foreign tourists in order to make them visit lesser know spots and relieve the pressure from the overcrowded top sights would be wonderful but how exactly are you gonna do that ?

Everybody wants to visit the top sights on their first trip to Japan and why shouldn't they so unless you are going to start implementing tourist caps on certain sights the effect of the World Cup rugby and Olympic Games won't do anything for ther lesser known municipalities.

Keep a healthy balance between tourists and local residents if not you will see groups of local residents turning against the tourists as is happening already in overcrowded locations such as Mallorca and Barcelona.

Although not a country, the IOC is going to let a region or a state to host an Olympic in the future. It was on my local news because my city is considering bidding for the Olympic. It said the change can make it more attractive to those people who worries about the cost.

The “huge number of visitors” for the Olympics is a myth. Soccer , Rugby and even cricket have traveling fans but athletics are a bit thin on the ground. Maybe the thousands of 50km walk fans or archery buffs will turn up. Or even the masses of wheelchair basketball fans? Most of the other sports have more important tournaments... Soccer in the Olympics? Outside of Japan nobody cares!

London had less visitors than usual during the games.

This years Rugby World Cup will probably have more fans arriving than the 5 ring farce next year.

I guess they fail to realize that most visitors will plan their itineraries a year in advance.

I’ve already had a few bookings from people coming over for the Olympics. One group doesn’t have tickets yet.

Seeing as 80% of the tickets are sold /going to be sold in Japan and only 20% outside of Japan and how most hotels in Tokyo are booked during the Olympics, I wonder if there will be an extraordinary influx of tourists.

For years I have been suggesting that countries, not cities, host these types of games. That way, most of the infrastructure needed will most likely be already built somewhere. That way, most of the citizens of the country would feel a part of the Olympics, as one or two events would be held close to them. What’s the point of selling tickets to non-Tokyoite Japanese if they can’t visit and stay the night because accommodations would be near impossible to procure. An Olympics shared by a whole country would be less taxing on the whole country. The rest of the country would benefit from some of the tourism to their areas.

There won’t be many Brits making the trip-only the rich ones...

Well, if the Olympics would allow the host "city" to have events in locations throughout the country it would be entirely feasible that there would be more tourists visiting other places as well.

Besides using Fukushima for baseball and softball, use Okinawa for Karate! It is the birthplace of karate, and it has held a number of international tournaments too!

At least some regional leader they are realistic, hopefully more people be realistic after summer 2020.

Good Point

The same thing happened with the winter olympics in S Korea where there was a prediction that tourist were gonna go explore around the surrounding local areas.

This was not the case as tourist just stayed around the touristy areas and ate at the places they were familiar with aka McDonalds.

This is probably going to be the case with the majority of tourist staying in Tokyo and possibly making side trips to Kyoto/Osaka and completly byspassing the other prefectures.
