Narita airport to extend runway hours in October

Once again Olympics being used as an excuse. Narita wants to make more money since Haneda went 24/7. Just needed a reason to do it!

I have really been critical of the Olympics as a huge waste of money, tons of corruption, and forced patriotism, but if it gets this moribund country to step up and do the things that people have been screaming for for years, then good on them. Now lets just make sure that public transit will continue to run at that time.

Midnight... How does anybody get into town? Do they extend the operatibg hours of trains and buses too?

Yes, if Narita and Haneda are going to run that late, then the buses and trains need to go all night.

How bout trains and bus to get in town? Ride a taxi maybe ... yolo..

After all of these years, the last Skyliner leaves Narita at 10:30 p.m. and the last Narita Express leaves at 9:45 p.m.

So, if you want to get to downtown Tokyo after that, you either cough up the Yen 30,000 (because of the late night surcharge) or you cram yourself into a Limousine Bus.

No. Narita Shinkansen abandoned years back. Those tracks/platforms that were intended for that at Tokyo are used by the JR Keiyo Line. No room OR land for extension.

I suspect there be more departures rather than arrivals with the extension of opening hours. Will enable the LCC's to fly to more SE Asian destinations and arrive at a slightly more sensible time than they would be able to at present.

Yes they need to have all of the transport for Narita run thru to at least 2 am....

I never understood why the shinkansen does not go to Narita. It would take 20 minutes to get to Tokyo if the shinkansen extended to Narita. Am I the only genius?

I grew up in Japan, including in the '70s when the plans for the opening of Narita were in final phases and the future plans for a Shinkansen link were very much being implemented.

As with everything else related to Narita, the government was not able to steamroll local opposition to their plans for the airport. For better or worse.

Some have floated ideas about a maglev line connecting Haneda and Tokyo Station and Narita but there is absolutely nothing in terms of concrete plans underway at this point.

It must be the poor insulation and cheap building materials that make Japanese so sensitive to airport noise. I lived near a major airport and had planes with wheels down flying overhead, but wasn't bothered by the noise.

I'd like to see the runway at the north end of the airport extended with a terminal fit-out so that they can dramatically expand the domestic routes served from Narita.

To get to my family's home in northern Honshu, I have to take ground transportation to Haneda, or goof around with trains for another 6 hours- neither is ideal travelling with a toddler.

A few things to clarify here.

No where in the article does it suggest these will be regularly scheduled flights, however it does allow the airport to offer up those slot times should they be viable to the airlines.

This may be an ideal time for cargo flights to arrive, so perhaps consider spending less in 2019.

Also, there have been several issues recently regarding the cancellation of flights if they know the flight cannot arrive within the allotted runway usage times. With the hour extension, flights that are delayed still have the option of at least carrying their passengers to their destinations.

Also, Narita is a huge hub which means it is not the final destination for many. I'm sure they would consider offering later slot times to majority transiting flights instead of forcing passengers to disembark to an empty airport with no means of transportation.

Give them some credit guys.
