The Royal Express, Japan’s newest and biggest tourist train, will start operations in July 2017.

The royal blue luxury train will be operated by Tokyu Corp and Izukyu Corporation, Fuji TV reported. It will run between JR Yokohama Station in Kanagawa Prefecture and Izukyu-Shimoda Station in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The train, aimed at tourists, will have a capacity of 100 passengers. There will also be a dining car and a multipurpose car for wedding ceremonies or small concerts.

Just watched an NHK World show about tourist trains on Shikoku. Surprised that they get enough business.

I much prefer the amazing scenery of the Shimantogawa line. The Yokohama to Shimoda route is a surefire winner, though.

Only 100 passengers? Quite a small train compared to the regular Odoriko which carries around 500 passengers.

I saw this train in 2014 doing the same line. I was shop at the crossing at Usami and I ask my Partner that I have not seen this royal blue train before. Like I said that was 2014 summer. I also pass the Narita express at Ito Kogen. Again I ask my partner does the Narita express come all the way down here. I was told that the Emporia son travels on this train and he was to visit Shimoda. There were Security Men on every station from Atami to Shimoda

Outstanding!! I look forward to checking it out.

I have been going to Shimoda regularly for years and I affectionately refer to the Odoriko between Tokyo and Shimoda as the "Chuu-hai Express". Particularly Sunday evening in the summer, there is nothing better than hopping on the last Odoriko from Shimoda back to Tokyo after a weekend of relaxation and popping open a couple of tins of chuu-hai.

I imagine this will be priced up and it does look a little "cheesy" in terms of the interior, but still can't wait to check it out next summer!!

@@@Chop Chop and Die Hard, There is no train in many states. We have to go back to learn what the trains are.

toshiko: America has more track distance than does Japan for trains.

I was looking forward to trip to Shimoda from Atami on the regular train. But we sat in the last 2 cars and had a window sit. At Ito Kogan they drop off the last two cars so we had to move other seats which where on the west side of the train. I really enjoy the trip from Otari to Itoigawa it criss crosses to mountain river hug to the side of ravines.

While that may be true, most of it is dedicated to freight or otherwise shared using routes dating from the late 1800s and, the worst part, it is sloooow and rarely on schedule. But he is correct - most states have no meaningful passenger rail service.
