Newborn baby found dead in Fukuoka supermarket toilet

A baby boy was found dead wrapped in a plastic bag in a supermarket in Fukuoka City on Sunday, believed to have been born just hours earlier, police said.

The manager of the supermarket called police at around 11.20 a.m. and told them a male infant had been found dead in the ladies toilet. The infant was found naked wrapped inside a plastic bag, and had its umbilical cord still attached. The baby had no apparent external injuries and is believed to have lived for just a couple of hours.

Police said an autopsy will be carried out Monday and they will attempt to identify the baby's mother.

Rest in peace, lovely beautiful angel. You've been spared from this sick and rotten society. May your "mother" burn in the realms of hell for all eternity.

You've been spared from this sick and rotten society.

A dead baby every once in a while hardly makes the whole thing sick and rotten.

May your "mother" burn in the realms of hell for all eternity.

In fact, the whole reason for this was more than likely because of the father. For the male, preventing pregnancy is a piece of cake. Its a fair bet he caused one he didn't want and then did not stick around to either pay for an abortion or help with pregnancy he caused. I would also be willing the bet the mother was scared, confused and alone and had no desire for the baby to die. The death of the baby might well have been an accident caused by her confused state and a lack of options.

Ahhhhh, what kind of Sicko would do something like this? poor baby.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Im with dontknock it!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

on that note... I would say Japan leads the world in toilet death deliveries... but it always comes back to put a nice blemish on modern society here.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The baby was dumped by its mother and no amount of rationalization will ever change that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

for all we know it could have been rape or some sleaze bag guy... but the toilet can be avoided and the child simply dropped off at a koban or hatch... its still a life... the lad had no choice...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Rest in peace little one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

alargo: The baby was dumped by its mother and no amount of rationalization will ever change that.

How do you know the baby was not dead of natural causes when the mother left him? For that matter, how do you know it was the mother that dumped him? It might have been the father. Or a pimp.

How do you know the mother was not abused?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A dead baby? are you kidding me? Even if I was brutally raped by 20 in the mountain next to my house, I'd have the humanity at least, to drop the baby by the police sation or nearby hospital. No need to let a newborn baby die alone. No excuse. period.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can't understand why this isn't in the Crime section?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

First. RIP little angel. I hope your joke of a mother is taken to a special part of hell. Second@ dontknockit. Are you defending a baby murderer? You blame the father, that's too easy. The mother is the one who left the child. The report said the child lived for a couple of hours!!! Jeez, I'm sat here with tears streaming down my cheeks cause some sicko can do this. there is NO defense for this, NO justification. She had a family, if she doesn't have a family leave the child at a hospital, give him a chance!! So what if the baby is not planned or the father is a weakling who's done a runner. STEP UP and cope. I have many little buggerlugs and although not one was planned and each put more finacial stress on my wages, each is a joy and i love them everyday.

@bebrownboy. No ones been charged.

Just the kind of news story I want to read on Monday morning to start my week. Simply heartbreaking...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

bcbrownboy: I can't understand why this isn't in the Crime section?

A good point. As the boy was wrapped in plastic, it looks like abandonment of a corpse to me. It seems very unlikely the boy was taken there alive and left to die. Whoever left the body could have been anyone, including a yak who has the mother locked up as a forced prostitute/ sex slave. It would certainly explain why no abortion was done if the baby was unwanted.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Im with KyokoSmile on this one. We all have a duty to look after those who cannot fend for themselves.

In fact, the whole reason for this was more than likely because of the father.

Really? what are you basing this on?

For the male, preventing pregnancy is a piece of cake.

I agree. Its also pretty easy for the female too...

Its a fair bet he caused one he didn't want and then did not stick around to either pay for an abortion or help with pregnancy he caused.

A 'fair bet'. So you assume that most guys would leave girls that they got pregnant to fend for themselves? You must really hate guys.

I would also be willing the bet the mother was scared, confused and alone and had no desire for the baby to die.

Agreed that she was probably scared and alone. Confused? not sure why she would be confused. No desire for the baby to die? Well she didnt seem to have much desire for the baby to live either. It would have been a 'piece of cake' for her to call an ambulance, or get someone from the supermarket to do so.

The death of the baby might well have been an accident caused by her confused state and a lack of options.

again, what is this 'confusion'? where are the 'lack of options' she had options, and she chose to leave her baby alone, in a toilet, to die.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why didn't she just get an abortion?! Ugh. And to think of all the couples out there who try so hard to have babies and can't. Couldn't she have found one of those couples and given them her baby?

:(

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Most likely a high school student or minor would got nailed by her bf and didn't want to tell her parents she was knocked up. Hid the pregnancy and dumped it without a trace. I have heard they can hide it so well nobody notices.

If that infant had been born to that witch, his life likely would nto have been to great, but that does not justify leaving a little boy for dead on purpose in a public toilet.

Didn't anyone hear it scream at 11am on a Sunday? Maybe he was already dead?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I hate Monday mornings already and then I read this horrible story. I feel like I've been punched in the stomache and didn't see it coming. I hope they trace the mother and justice is served. The little guy never had a chance. RIP.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

RIP angel. I hope there is an enormous playpen up there with millions of toys for you to enjoy, smile and laugh. So sad that this excuse for a human was chosen to be your mother (not to mention the father). I pray that demons haunt these pathetic humans every second for the rest of her lives.

Most of us have a built in instinct to care for and nurture a child at all costs. Sadly some people like those responsible for this particular baby dont.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

SCARY and GRUESOME NEWS !!!!!

Must be a girl under 30 years old. scary !!!! She must be living around that neighborhood.

Scary !!!!!

Police said an autopsy will be carried out Monday and they will attempt to identify the baby’s mother.

I feel sorry for the medical team/doctor who has to perform an autopsy on a new born baby. I could never do that. The images would haunt me for the rest of my life. Total respect for those who have the professional skill and mental strength to do it...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At least if cant afford it, leave in a place where others can take care but not to die ...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Man I just feel like swearing my head off!!!! What a **** no good words for them!!! This is about the worst form of murder I can think of, to an innocent child who needed to be loved by his mother...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

buggerlugs, you are NOT alone..here I am too trying to get myself back together after crying for a bit, since I too lost my beloved baby boy not in death but in physical presence. Anything concerning dead children makes puke and wish I was dead. I'm too weak for these heartbreaking stories. Always afraid of one day reading this very awful news about my own stranged boy since he's here in this country. Enough already with this sort of thing. It just seems too typical and common for the j-folks. Are they down with this kind of cruelty?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Must be a sad and horrible life without options to think that dumping your own kid in a toilet is your only choice. Regardless if they catch this girl or not, her life will likely be filled with pain and misery, anyway.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We don't know the circumstances that led to this tragedy yet. All we know is that we have a dead baby and a (presumably young) mother who probably isn't getting the physical and mental help she obviously needs. Very sad.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't know if I have the words to express the sadness...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Rest in peace little baby boy. I'm going home tonight and giving my baby son an extra hug... so happy he's with me. So sad for this little boy.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Poor girl, to think that her only option was to leave the baby in the toilet. But really, in Japan ... there aren't that many other options.

Japan needs needs NEEDS to figure out a few things before these kinds of cases will decrease.

Anonymous baby dropoff points. There's one in Kumamoto, but they still try to find the mother anyway. Real, ANONYMOUS dropoff points are needed.

We just read on JT about the lack of a good foster system. If you do drop off your baby, you're sentencing it to a terrible life in an orphanage, almost guaranteed.

But if you keep the baby, you may be sentencing yourself to a horrible life of poverty. If you think marriage is your only option for a good future, men may not want to marry you if you already have a child. More assistance is necessary for single mothers.

Not to mention, since pregnancy and abortion and pre-natal care are all not covered by NHI, having a baby by yourself in a hospital could be financially devastating and an abortion financially impossible (they start around 100,000 yen for the earliest terminations). A woman with no financial resources could be stuck having a baby but then not have the money to have the baby!

And let's not get started on the personal responsibility of men, which is lacking in Japan in general.

No, I can't blame the woman who did this. It's sad, but I understand that this may have been too overwhelming and she felt in over her head. It's bad, but in the current system it's really unavoidable.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How can a mother be so cruel?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, Cleo. I'm sorry for the mother. She must be feeling awful.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hate reading these type of stories...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For all you leaping in and accusing the mother; hoping she rots in hell etc, who's to say the baby wasn't snatched and dumped there?

And how can you not pity a woman that 'felt' she had no other option than to do this.

Sad all round. Have some compassion at least.

Monkeyz: You made some very good points. Japan has to stop worrying about the declining birth rate and start caring about the babies that are being born!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Barbaric...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How to cope with unexpected pregnancies- Can some NGO do an awareness program in schools, national media, love hotels.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mokeyz: Great post!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

MonkeyZ -- agree, excellent post. This country is stuck in neutral when it comes to many critical social-welfare systems. Unwanted pregnancies being high on the list.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Could have been a still birth. Will not know until the autopsy. There have been cases where quite fat people gave birth and did not even know they were pregnant. Happens around the world, but here most people are not fat, so I doubt that is the case. Poor little baby.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Cant say I agree with all of the comments degrading Japanese parents parents and their attitude towards children. Well actually I do agree with them its just that other countries are just as bad. Australia is no better. Mothers throw their children off balconies, throw them into scalding hot baths, feed them poison or they just sit by while the step father bashes and abuses the kid bashing it with a hammer or throwing it against a wall. Social services dont do anything even when they know the childs life is in danger. No one cares too much. The abusers get a light sentence or none at all. Its not just Japan folks.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sick! Sick! Sick! Such a sad news! May this poor baby boy rest in peace.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

no such thing as adoption in Japan? I haven't heard of it. God forbid that a westerner come here and adopt a Japanese child, give them love, give them a home, give them a family. No throw them away in a supermarket toilet. Sad that Japan hasn't and won't join us in the 20th century. I don't agree with drop off points, but I support adoption 100000%. But as far as I know, I have never meet someone who has been adopted here. Heck this country still counts the father of a child based on marriage not paternity. The mother could even tell the government the father name, but the real father will never going to get paternity.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

noborito: I agree. Japanese people need to change their attitude towards adoption and the family registry has got to go. Women are afraid that the baby's name will go on their registry and bring them shame so there are lots of women who probably opt to abort or abandon their child. Very sad. There is just too much importance placed on blood ties.

Children who are abandoned at hatches or put into child-care institutions have very little chance of being adopted. Adoption of non-related kids only began in 1989 and there are only a few hundred cases approved every year. A message has to be sent that adoption is good for kids and certainly even a foster home is likely better than growing up in an institution.

Who knows what this woman's situation was. What we do know is that she obviously didn't have the support that a pregnant woman should have. I just find it hard to believe that any woman, after giving birth, could be cold-hearted enough just leave her baby to die...it's just one of the most awful things one can think of. Leaving a baby at a hatch isn't a pretty thought either but it's better than this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The woman probably was helpless and destitute. But that child was even more helpless. Yes, she should not have abandoned the child, even if it was still born. It would have been easier to face the whole thing. Someone would have intervened and given solace to the woman.

As for the father, he has to be found somehow. Amazing how some gentlemen here are happily ignoring the man who was also equally responsible responsible for the birth and probably the death of the child. Even if the whole thing was a mistake, he should have stood by that woman and helped her out of it. Well, in my books, his sins are double because he was responsible for the death of the child and for letting the woman down.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Of course peoples' first reaction is to blame the mother and wonder how someone could do it. But the point is that we can never be that mother so of course we can't understand why. Yes, it's sad but happens in every country and it is still relatively rare in a country of 127,000,000 people. Sadder is the fact that 30,000 children under the age of 5 die EVERY DAY in the world (that's 1,250 EVERY HOUR). That is truly sad. I empathize with the mother and I hope the baby boy never managed to breathe on his own which may well be the case.

Look at all these women sticking up for women. Its good. But int the heat of the battle....women cry out like babies and forsake the child. Its the truth.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

woman for women I appreciate your compassion for women but dont you think unborn children and children have a say.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Is no way on the face of this god forsaken plant that women will ever have the right to kill..KILL......thier own children. Be they born or still in the womb. Death or hell for those that do. Having a child is a gift from god. U forsake it hell gonna rain on u.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Chotto... when you hear hoof beats think horses not zebras as the saying goes. How often do babies get snatched moments after birth, umbilical cord still attached? I know this is Japan, but I doubt the mother simply left the newborn (literally) in the backseat after giving birth so she could run into the drug store. Snatched... Really, that is absurd.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

masterkun, thanks. I did say that the woman should not have killed or abandoned that child. But I am also asking how can the man go scot free. Let it be an innocent young man, or a rapist or a yak; but he should be found and punished too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Can't imagine having a baby in a uspermarket restroom. Yuck! Poor baby.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The irresponsible father did a crime fleeing from taking any care about the mother and the mother continued this fault and also committed an equal crime abandoning the akachan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

fondofj and womanforwomen, how do you know that the woman didn't run away from the father? Who says she didn't want to be with him, or she didn't want to stay with him, or whatever the case may be. Regardless of whether the man was there, at the store or at home or where ever, to "help" or not help her, this really falls squarely on the shoulders of the woman, who after nine months of having this child in her belly; feeding it and providing it shelter. YOU CANNOT CALL YOURSELF A WOMAN IF YOU GIVE BIRTH TO YOUR CHILD AND LEAVE IT IN THE SUPER MARKET TOILET!!!!!!!! No woman I know would EVER do this, no matter the circumstances. This will never make any sense and I agree with masterkun05

Is no way on the face of this god forsaken plant that women will ever have the right to kill..KILL......thier own children. Be they born or still in the womb. Death or hell for those that do. Having a child is a gift from god. U forsake it hell gonna rain on u

Only thing I don't agree with is the death. No, live the rest of your life as a miserable old woman who knows her own flesh and blood died in a supermarket toilet. Then spend the rest of eternity in hell thinking about it some more. Terrible terrible WOMAN.

(But if the man did standby and let this happen, then he too shall see the punishment she does...)

no such thing as adoption in Japan?

Believe it or not, abortion is extremely common in Japan, and practiced regularly, without guilt attached. I wouldn't be surprised if love hotels, and pachinko places offer it for reward points.

woman for woman..........I cant agree more. Takes two to tango. All parties are equally responsible.

Fidn the mother, lock her up for life, throw away the key. And if the father can be found, same for him....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't agree with masterkun05.

Is no way on the face of this god forsaken plant that women will ever have the right to kill..KILL......thier own children. Be they born or still in the womb. Death or hell for those that do. Having a child is a gift from god. U forsake it hell gonna rain on u

Why bring your personal version of a god into this? Whoever killed this child, mother or not, she or he sure as hell doesn't believe in your god. So why do you think your god is so important?

Everybody, this is about the tragic and unnecessary death of a newborn baby. Probably it was the mother who killed him, but not necessarily. Stop ranting at the mother and try hating the killer instead, whoever it was, then you cover all eventualities. Otherwise you're wasting your hate and being judge, jury and executioner without any evidence.

Feel sorrow for the loss of an innocent life. Feel hatred and anger towards the person who killed him. Don't assume things, or people like Fritzl around the world will be able to get away with their evil behavior forever.

Hopefully they'll be able to find a potential for the abandonment charge by viewing the cctv tapes. If the child was born in the toilets, as some seem to believe, it will be obvious who it was. She would have been in there for a long time. If the baby was taken there and abandoned then it will be the time on the clock that gets them. But surely if the woman spent hours in the loos someone would have noticed? It's not easy to give birth silently for a start.
